Replace 'hosts' file on Desire

Search This thread
boot into recovery.
run recovery-windows.bat
run install-adfree-windows-step1.bat
reboot into your normal system
install adfree from the market
start adfree

Kingchris, thanks for your efforts on this - mine is now working with OTA HTC 2.2

I haven't been able to find anymore detail on this issue so i thought i should give other users the heads up in your post - i was having the same problem but now when attempting your version i'm getting the message ''Out of Date This copy of adfree is too old, please update to a newer version''

You should remove the ''install-adfree-windows-step2.bat" from the instructions and advise to download the latest version and install :).

Worked for me - thanks again!

Sent my SenseHD ROM into intermittent boot-ups...RCMixHD v10, unfortunately. And patched AdFree error on app launch says "too old version" and exits.

i have created a new version of the fiel with a step1 and step2 batch

boot into recovery.
run recovery-windows.bat
run install-adfree-windows-step1.bat
reboot into your normal system
install-adfree-windows-step2.bat
then start adfree

if you get the Error Message try it again.
i think this is not an error created by the modification,
this is a problem on checking and downloading the hosts file

i made an error in the first script
in the script i wrote adb mount but it has to be adb shell mount

Hello!

I am a big NOOB (at least I feel like one).

I have a rooted Desire with Leedroid2.2f (if it does matter).

I dont make it when I try your "step by step-help" so I hope you or someone else can help me? :)

Here is how I did when I tryed:

1. download the zip-file to phones SD card
2. Reboot the phone in recovery-mode
3. Now Im stuck. Explain exactly how I will: "run recovery-windows.bat" ?

Should I unzip the files to the phone's SD memory? Or should I unzip the files to your computer? Or how do I proceed?

Please help a Noob like me

Just uninstall the old version, then download and manually install the new one. Then update the hosts file if necessary. -> SUCCESS!
Hi

I dont understand the difference between the old one and the new one.

The old one stored the downloaded hosts file in /sdcard/etc ???
The new one seems to download in /system/etc (with error due to read only), or in /data/data if the 'Symlink' checkbox is checked ???

What happens to my /sdcard/etc/hosts file if i tap "Download and install" in the new one ?

sorry for my english :D

OK, tried this and I'm stuck.
boot into recovery.
run recovery-windows.bat
run install-adfree-windows-step1.bat
reboot into your normal system
install-adfree-windows-step2.bat
then start adfree

Got as far as reboot into your normal system.
Phone reboots, shows HTC logo and reboots again. Phone will not boot up. Any ideas?

OK, couldn't do anything with the phone - tried to restore stock rom - no good. In the end the only option I had was to install a custom rom from SD card (zip update). This has got the phone up and running again.

Very new to all this - gave me one heck of a fright.

Anyway I think I'm going to leave well alone for a while until I'm a little more used to this. Panic over (till next time :p)

Tried to copy the updated hosts file from the SD card to the device /system/etc/ using root explorer. Reports file already exists then fails to update it saying not enough space on device. There is plenty of room.

Reluctant to try alternative method again in case it goes wrong like last time.

Just googling for reasons as to why root explorer would not work.

I sorted it, sorry, only just checked back to this thread. I found an updated host file that someone made into an update.zip file. I copied the file to the SD card and applied it as an update - it went on fine. Can't say I've noticed any ads at all really so it must be working. Try googling it, if you can't find it PM me and I'll send it you as I still have it here on my PC (can't remember where I found it TBH)
