Firstly let me make clear that I have taken inspiration from SimpText by UltraLinx, you can find his thread here: http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=742449
I loved the idea he had created, very simple and minimalistic, however on my Desire the icons were just too small to be useful for me. Very kindly, UltraLinx also provided the PSD file he based his icons on. From this I amended the colours, the font, the size, as well as some more font options.
The end result is as follows:
