Will rooting a T989 delete anything in the phones memory or on both internal and external sd cards?

Rooting won't delete anything, but you'll need to have a custom recovery (TWRP or CWM) to root device and once you have custom recovery it's really a good idea to also do a nandroid backup with it, that way if anything goes wrong with device you can restore it.
