Having looked at a LOT of earphones looking for great ones with a mic, I can tell you that with Android it's tough going. I've spoken with a number of custom IEM cable makers about making cables for some of my stuff (Sennheiser IE8 and Klipsch X10 particularly) that has an Android-compatible mic, and have yet to find anyone willing to do it. It seems like our best option at the moment is to use mic adapters with the headsets we like, which has the added benefit of working even with large cans (I've used my Audio Technica adapter [AT-MP100,
here] to talk on my Sennheiser HD25i-II and Beyerdynamic T5p before, neither of which has a remote-compatible version to my knowledge). I can't recommend the build quality of the AT though-- it seems really cheap for the $25ish bucks I paid for it, and the sheathing around the 3.55mm plug has started sliding down and coming off, even though I haven't used them much.
Also, it seems the markup for earphones with mics over the same models without is fairly exorbitant. The Klipsch X10 (which is my all-time #1 recommendation to people trying to get into really fantastic sound for the first time, btw) is $111 on Amazon right now, while the mic-included X10i version costs $186. I've seen the difference in price between the two exceed $100 before, which is insanity. Use of an adapter is VASTLY more cost effective, and has the added benefit of working with a number of different headsets.
With that said: although I'm sure this isn't welcome news to anyone, it seems one of the reasons that audio companies and cable makers are so reluctant to use mics is because they degrade the quality of the sound-- and I hear a minor diminunition in the SQ when I use the AT. So while it is a bit of a hassle to have an extra cable (and to leave it unplugged when not in use, only to have to scramble to plug everything in when you're ready to use it), it's also a bit of a backdoor benefit in that if there aren't any mics out yet that don't degrade audio quality (a claim I can't presume to be knowledgeable enough to make, but one that others certainly have), you can listen to your music unimpeded when you'd like, and use the mic adapter when you need to.
Also, it seems that different companies wire their mics differently, so what might work on one headset will sound like crap another one (unless you hold down the talk button in a lot of cases). Meelectronics has some adapters that basically just change the wiring (
here) if anybody's having that issue. Pretty great play on their part IMO.
As far as SQ goes on the headsets mentioned, while I think the Meelectronics A151 (I don't have the 'P' version) sounds okay, I don't think it holds a candle to the X10 or the IE8, and for the cost difference, I'd recommend the X10 any day for its excellent sound, solid isolation, and excellent comfort. I've also purchased the V-Moda M80 as a gift twice, and absolutely LOVE those headphones. I know they aren't earphones, and they lack the clarity of the X10s, but they're such great all-arounders that they deserve mention here.
Anyway, I love the idea of this list, and wish more manufacturers would get their acts together and bring us some mics on high-end headphones that work well and don't degrade the quality of the music we love. Until then, I'd settle for a well-made adapter that gets out of the way of the sound and works well enough to be forgotten when not in use. If anybody has any suggestions here, I'm all ears
Hope this helps!! Kudos to the OP for the great thread idea!!
