It was automatic for me in the stock launcher, but I use Nova. If you use Nova you can actually go into the screen settings and check the transparent statusbar option. I downloaded xposed thinkin I could do it with gravgity box and saw that its not included in the 4.4 version. I went in Nova to change something and saw that option and tried it and it worked, without xposed framework.

1You can get the Tinted Status Bar Mod for Xposed which makes the status bar the same color as what is below it.
