Maps are useless without proper routing.
I agree, which is why there is such a thing as this thread in the first place.
"But you can try to generate the routing nodes manually (using Map Edit's menu Tools > Generate routing nodes) then after saving the map in Navitel format, it will be accepted by Navitel and the routing will be enabled."

Garmin announces software for iphone and android on the official website :D
He can`t post links, just like me, but If you search for "Garmin® Brings Turn-by-Turn Navigation to iPhone with New StreetPilot App" in google you will find out :)

Hmmm not really, I just read like 50 Webpages with the search term you gave and they all said the exact same thing: StreetPilot is now available for IPhones via the ITunes store for $39.99, Iphone and Android will get some other apps with different functions (translation: other than navigation) at some as yet undetermined future date. How exactly does this mean anything good for us, please, since I don't seem capable of understanting your meaning... :(

OLATHE, Kan. - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ:GRMN), the global leader in satellite navigation, today announced its first turn-by-turn navigation app for iPhone, StreetPilot, as well as its full lineup of new smartphone applications for both iPhone and Android. Garmin's new mobile applications -- including StreetPilot for iPhone, Garmin Tracker, myMechanic, and My-Cast Lite -- will be on display in the Garmin booth (South Hall #35831) at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

"Providing consumers with mobile applications is yet another way they can experience the benefits of Garmin - be it our navigation expertise or bringing the capabilities of our niche market products to a smartphone. GPS is an extremely helpful tool, but we recognize it's not a one-size-fits-all solution. We decided to introduce a new line of smartphone applications so that we can give customers a quality Garmin experience in the format of their choosing," said Dan Bartel, Garmin's vice president of worldwide sales.

The StreetPilot App: Designed specifically for iPhone, the StreetPilot App gives iPhone owners unlimited use of Garmin's industry-leading navigation with traffic alerts. The intuitive interface greets users with two simple options: "Where to?" and "View Map." Customers can easily look up addresses and services and get voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions that speak street names to their destination.

The StreetPilot App includes many of the same high-end features available on Garmin's standalone automotive GPS devices like free traffic alerts that enable drivers to steer clear of traffic accidents, road closures and construction; lane assist with junction view that directs drivers to the preferred lane and displays realistic images of upcoming complex junctions; and speed limit indicators that display speed limits for most major roads. It is an off-board navigation system so that customers always have the advantage of the most up-to-date mapping information available.

The StreetPilot App also integrates with a driver's iTunes music library so they can access and control their music while on the move; integrates with their address book so they can navigate directly from their contact list; and uses the multitasking ability of iOS 4 to allow them to take a phone call while the navigation continues to work in the background.

The StreetPilot App is available now for $39.99 from the App Store on iPhone or at www.itunes.com/appstore.

Garmin Tracker: Available soon for iPhone and Android, the free Garmin Tracker App works in conjunction with the Garmin GTU 10 tracking devices (also announced at CES 2011) allowing users to track the things that mean the most to them - a child, pet, boat, car and more - and see its location from the convenience of their smartphone.

myMechanic: Auto aficionados can now know their car's specific performance metrics including horsepower, torque, G-force, and more. Available for download from the Android Marketplace beginning in February 2011, myMechanic's information is available when paired via Bluetooth with Garmin's ecoRoute HD module.

My-Cast Lite: In addition to the lineup of My-Cast apps currently available for iPhone, a new, free My-Cast Lite application is available now for Android users which provides radar, current conditions, hourly and extended forecasts and more.

Since its inception in 1989, Garmin has delivered 72 million GPS enabled devices - far more than any other navigation provider. Garmin's market breadth in the GPS industry is second to none, having developed innovative products and established a leadership position in each of the markets it serves, including automotive, aviation, marine, fitness, outdoor recreation, tracking, and wireless applications.

There are lots of phones out there that are ALREADY running the Garmin Navigation app for Android, in fact every single Nuvifone A50 as well as all Garmin-Asus A10 phones that have been sold are already running it. So, if we haven't even been able to get the software when there are already versions of it that could just have been directly ripped out of the eclair 2.1 system image of these units, just how much easier could it be to get when those files are on a completely different OS this time???? :( :( :(

I just tried to separate some garminrelated files fromsystem image I uploaded before.
I havent tried yet but they should be copied to /system directory on android system.
I'm not android expert, just have some linux skills.

I also checked video from youtube of garminfone...
youtube.com/watch?v=EpipLPUa_pA
it explains a bit why it is not so easy to extract the application.

Anyway I hope that somebody could somehow extract it and make it work.

I upload the files I separated but I'mafraid that it isn't complete set.

test.itk-ib.ee/system.tar.gz

Anyway somebody who is smarter shoud check the system image.
I also have recovery image. If it is needed thenI can upload it as well.

Well, that's pretty much it for a report. In reality, though, what I can't do is simply thank you enough for this. I don't know how you found this package with my exact needs, but fact is you may very well have single-handedly killed off any possible reason I might have ever had to go back to dual booting WM6/Android on my phone, and somehow, just a little tiny written thank you just doesn't really seem enough appreciation, lol :). Thank you so much, buddy! :D :D :D

Your report was very detailed and precise. You see, I was in exact same position as you were and this is why I found your post. I am also on dual boot on my hd2. I hated the garmin xt version because the local free maps were slow and low quality. I needed one with detailed POIs and complete listing of street names and reasonable navigation within the major cities. I had spent weeks into this and finally someone just dropped this on my lap 2 days ago. This guy is a real genius in GPS systems and I think he will open up and garmin professional map for me real soon. We will me able to convert it to run on navitel system. Stay tuned and I will hook you up.

Garmin maps are the only ones in my country (Slovenia) and neighbouring countries that cover every village in full detail. I now use my former Windows Mobile phone just for navigation :(

Would really support this on Android!

Have you tried Copilot, it is preaty good. I think the only one which can compare to garmin, and it even has slovenian menu and voice.

ADB + Garmin

Has anybody tried to run the Garmin app for Android (on one of their phones) with a connected ADB?
I am curious if this can give us the list of opened files by the navigation apps.
Then those files can be copiedfrom the ext3 partition or update image to other mobilesor eve in emulator to check if they work. I am expecting however some hardware checks.

I just heard that Asus had just collaborated with Garmin and produced an Asus-Garmin phone which runs on Android Eclair.

    Here's the link : http://techcentral.my/gadgetsandapp...reviews/20101109104759&sec=it_gadgets_reviews

So anyone into ROM dump? However I don't think it's legal..... hmmmmm...

    Update 03/03/2011

Ok so it seems that this is still ongoing and I saw several members post a request to get specific files in order to extract the app out and make it compatible with other android devices.

And here's an elaboration from ajape.

The actual problem is that there are two version of this program, and the one that can be downloaded from the link provided in the last page is NOT the one we need. After all, all this is about having access to our Garmin maps WITHOUT having to have a full time internet or 3G connection, otherwise why even bother with anything beyond google maps?

Anyways, I digress, there are two versions of this program: Garmap Online and Garmap Onboard. The one we all need is Garmpa Onboard for android, that's the version that reads your maps from a folder in your SD card, the one in the link posted in this thread is not... well, completely useless I guess, but it's still a far, far thing from what we're all trying to achieve here, which is to access our Garmin maps in our Android phones.

Anyways, here's the info about Garmap Onboard app that we need:

    Description:

Garmap for Mobile Onboard has no reliance on network coverage, making life simpler and more convenient.

    With Onboard navigation users enjoy:
    - Turn-by-turn voice prompts
    - 2D/3D city map views
    - POI dialing
    - FREE safety camera alerts
    - Preloaded maps
    - Optimal itinerary planning with waypoints
    - Network independent allowing easy travel across borders

    www.garmapmobile.co.za/onboard

    What’s New

    ***ADVANCED LANE ASSSIST***

Garmap’s advanced lane assist pop up will help you navigate those complicated intersections by indicating which lane to use. Never miss an off-ramp again!

    ***ADVANCED ROUTE PLANNING***

Plan your route using Garmap’s advanced ‘Itinerary’ option and optimse your route to save time and fuel.

Guys, I may not visit this thread frequent, but I do visit XDA often. So should there be any updates which you want me to post here, kindly PM and I would be more than happy to update the current progress.

    Thanks for your encouraging report.

Which version of Navitel did you use?
That's version 3.5, it was a repost from when I originally posted this report on this same thread a while ago. But 3.5 doesn't work on GB (Don't know about ICS, but I should think not as well), you need version 5.0.x or better now, and beware that some of the versions don't accept maps in nm2 format anymore, while some do. I think it's 5.0.1.169 (full version apk, mind) or something like that which you want. This is because anyone can convert any IMG format Garmin map to nm2 very easily just using GPSMapedit, while this is not the case with the new Navitel format nm3. Please remember to convert tiles or maps that leave you with an nm2 map file no larger than 16MB, that's a very common error. Ah! And also, the NavitelContent folder on the root of your SD Card must not have more than 61 nm2 maps at the time, otherwise NAVITEL will give you an error when trying to create it's Map Atlas. And don't worry, Navitel will make Navigation seamless even if your maps are cut differently for conversion purposes than they were originally cut by Garmin. Also, converting NT maps to nm2 may give you an error citing routing issues, if this is the case then you can also repair the routing errors manually and it will be fine, although I personally never actually managed to learn how exactly to go about those repairs in GPSMapedit. But I understand it's not rocket science either, so don't worry and go for it! :)

    Garmin StreetPilot for Android v1.49
It´s been a while since Garmin has been available for Android already, it´s just really complicated to get it to work properly. Over three days in my case, although it was definitely worth it. Now it´s up to version 2.16, up from the 1.49 you mentioned::

    25q5154.jpg

The whole super complicated process and all pertinent files can be found here, note that you have to register in this board also to have full access. Good Luck! You´ll most likely need it, hehehe ;) :good:
