When doing a system wipe in SafeStrap OR during a given ROM install, does it also wipe the kernel or is that on a separate partition and left alone? 
Another words, say given ROM has a "No Kernel" install option but of course does the /system wipe. Would I retain my current NC5 stock kernel?

When you are doing a system wipe, the kernel gets reinstalled by the ROM or stock ROM that you have chosen to do. (so technically it will always be there)
Also, you will not have a kernel if there is a no kernel option. Yet you can run the system without a kernel anyways, but if you like that as a kernel, I would back it up.
