After much testing and debugging, I present to you the Android counterpart to the Penki light painting app!

Aurora Bulb does what Penki does - and more! It does both text and bitmaps, for example.

Does it work like Penki ? Are the instructions the same ?

I've just attached the APK to the original post... try it out!
It works exactly the same way as Penki, except that you can control the colors, fonts and even load a bitmap.
Post any pictures you create using the app... it's free!

Any advice on getting this working without a camera, i.e. just by waving the phone back and forth in a dark room?

It seems to me that all you would need to do is wave it at the correct speed so that the scrolling letters sync up with the text, but after some pretty extensive trial and error I will say that this is not nearly as easy as it seems.
