Hey guys. I've been looking through this list for quite some time deciding on what case to buy for my nexus 4 and I've finally decided to try two cases to see how they fair.

I wanted to share my thoughts and opinions now that I've had some time with both cases.

I decided to try out the Diztronic Matte Rubberized Black Ultra Thin One Piece Hard Shell Case (Amazon Link HERE)
and the Rearth Ringke SLIM SF Matte Black Revised Version (Amazon Link HERE)

They are both solid cases with very minor differences that will determine with case you ultimately prefer. Onto photos!



From the front they look pretty similar but the RingkeSlim case wraps around the corners of the Nexus further than the Distronic. It's also not readily apparent at first glance, but the RingkeSlim also has a thinner bezel which makes a difference when you are sliding your fingers from the edges of the screen. It might not look thinner in the photos but its definitely something you can feel in practice. Both have similar feel/texture but the Distronic has a slightly softer/rubbier feel while the Ringke a slightly more rigid/plastic feel. Both feel great in your hand and are comparable



The backs of the cases are pretty identical. They both place their respective logos at the base of the unit. The Distronic logo is carved in, while the RingkeSLIM logo is a glossy finish that you don't really see unless you catch light at the right angle. Both logos are very low key and don't distract from the case. If you look closely at the images you'll notice the RingkeSlim has a more distinct edge separating the back of the case from the borders. By contrast the Distronic has softer, more feathered transitions from the back of the case to surrounding borders.



In addition to the edges of the case, the power and volume buttons are areas where you'll also feel the difference in thickness. The Distronic case has rounded edges surrounding the buttons while the RingkeSlim tapers towards buttons. The only way I can think of describing the cutouts for either case is that the Distronic feels more like a speed bump with its rounded off cutouts. It has that raised edge feel. The RingkeSlim is more like a ramp guiding you towards your destination. It feels like it sits nearly flush with the phone. I personally favored the Ringke in this regard but it really comes down to whether you prefer rounded or tapered edges. I also preferred the RingkeSlim's raised top and bottom corners of the case so that the screen doesnt lay flat on the surface you lay it on. The Distronic also solves this problem but does so by using slightly taller/thicker edges all around the case as opposed to just the top and bottom corners.




As an added bonus the RingkeSlim also has these nice slots for those of you that like to further personalize your phone with lanyards, threads, charms or whatever else. I don't have use for it personally but I do like that the option is there.

Ultimately I preferred the RingkeSlim. It feels thinner, protects more of the corners, the edges and buttons feel nicer in practice and provided some protection from minor drops while keeping a slim profile. If the back of the case was completely transparent I would have had exactly what I was looking for, but for now the RingkeSlim is a great case.

TLDR:

RingkeSlim has thinner profile vs Distronic slightly thicker profile
RingkeSlim has raised corners to prevent screen from touching surface vs Distronic raised edges all around
RingkeSlim has better experience swiping from edges as a result of raised corners over raised edges
RingkeSlim has tapered cutouts for button access vs Distronic has rounded off cutouts for button access
RingkeSlim has small cutout for lanyards/charms vs Distronic has no cutouts for lanyards/charms
