I'm on 6.2 on my AKF, do I need to update my AKF to latest and greatest before I can use this? I want to be able to load different ROM (non-amazon)

No, if you have 6.2.1 on the kindle you can just run this, did it few hours ago, this is very easy, just install the drivers and run KFU. awesome utility, i had no problems and have been flashing roms since, got cm7 on there now, and am off to try ICS :D

I don't have Windows :( sucks that this utility only for Windows :(
I just downloaded 6.2.1, but should I go to 6.2.2 instead?

you can try to use alternate driver:
http://xdaforums.com/showpost.php?p=20855280&postcount=54
run install.bat then update driver
that's only a loose description that you see how it is done:

if you' asked for a driver:
-choose browse my computer for driver software
-Then select have disk
-Then select browse
-direct to where you downloaded the usb driver
-Select ok and ok

if you'r not asked and want to update the driver:
-Go to device manager
-right click on the exclamation mark kindle
-Choose update driver software
-choose browse my computer for driver software
-choose let me pick from a list of devices on my computer
-Then select have disk
-Then select browse
-direct to where you downloaded the usb driver
-Select ok and ok

Thanks to Jcase- It's rooted now using Burrito2 method . I then tried to run KFU 0.92 to install the extras ( Google apps etc) but it did not work. Google plus and Talk FC'ed on me. I lost whatsapp as well. What's the proper way to get back Google Market? Thanks

It's ok now :

I need to run this before running KFU 0.92 utility

adb shell ./data/local/BurritoRoot2.bin
adb root

Is whatsapp working for everyone ?

KFU with 6.2.2

I found the solution. First of all i changed the country value in the file /drivers/dpinst.xml from 0x0409 to 0x0407. This is the country code for germany.

After that the KFU installed on my german windows system.

As i already had a 6.2.2 update with burrito2 root, i also had to change the file run.bat.

Search with the editor for the line:

"tools\adb root
echo."

before that insert the lines:

"tools\adb shell /data/local/BurritoRoot2.bin
echo."

That did the trick. TWRP installed flawlessly...

If you update to 6.2.2 and use BurritoRoot2 you'll find that KFU doesn't work. I got around it by doing this prior to running it (and if KFU does something that reboots the Kindle, you'll need to do it again prior to doing anything else in KFU)

adb shell ./data/local/BurritoRoot2.bin
adb root

Once you do that, KFU does all the other stuff correctly, including reinstall all the apps with Market/Facebook/etc. and installing TWRP. Once KFU has been updated to use BurritoRoot2 it won't be a big deal. Hope this helps anyone who's trying to get back to where they were after the OTA update.

Hey just want to thank you for the post. I got my fire yesterday, rooted, installed twrp, and used app quarantine to quarantine the ota update apk hoping to prevent an OTA. And everything was working great. Until tonight I was messing around with my fire and it turned off, rebooted, then went to installing a package all on its own.

At first I was confused but I figured somehow the update went through. And sure enough after it restarted I was at 6.2.2, lost root, and twrp. So Ive been scrambling ever since trying to get it back to what it was. I was able to use burritoroot2 to get rooted again. And Ive spent hours reading and trying to install twrp again and finally found your post. So I guess now its just wait until KFU gets updated to be able to install twrp after 6.2.2?

So my question is, after Im able to get twrp back is there any sure fire way to block the OTA? Because I want to keep it at rooted stock. I saw this thread here, http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1451747 but it doesnt prevent ota. So other than a custom rom is there a way to prevent amazon from sabotaging my device? Thanks

Like an idiot I updated to 6.2.2 last night but then decided I wanted to root today. Is this going to be updated to use Burritoroot2 or should I just root it by hand(preferably not)

I got it rooted by hand but IDK what to do to install twrp by cmd. Does the image have to be in the KindleADB folder with the other stuff(su, superuser.apk)
EDIT: Decided screw doing it by hand and did the method the couple guys above me did for recovery and it worked great. Thanks guys

I really hope that at some point, there is a more standardized, predictable and SUCCESSFUL way to flash a recovery system onto our Kindle Fires. I'm not a techie per se' (I do this just as a hobby), so I rely heavily on following directions. It doesn't have to be as easy as having ROM Manager and selecting the Flash CWR option, but it would be nice to be able to follow a set of instructions that include downloading the needed files, and using ADB to enter some commands and end up with a recovery system on my Fire. A nearly complete build of CM9 is out now and it sure would be nice to be able to flash it!

Edit: Used the KFU many times but cannot get a complete install of TWR.

place kfu in something like c:\kfu - it does'nt like blanks in the pathname

and if you have 6.2.2:
root with burritoroot2 and run

adb shell ./data/local/BurritoRoot2.bin
adb root

everytime before using kfu

Thanks. I'll give that a try. Is the Cygwin1.dll supposed to be in the zip file? I noticed that the utility calls on fastboot but that wasn't in the bundle so I'm wondering if the file I dl'd was just missing some stuff for some reason.

WARNING: DO NOT use this on 2nd Generation Devices or you risk bricking your Device.

These procedures are for FIRST GENERATION Devices ONLY. In otherwords, for the ORIGINAL KF. If you proceed to use this on your 2nd Generation Device, and you BRICK it, don't complain. You have been warned.

This thread is also no longer maintained. A new Thread has been opened.

    The new Thread

    MD Moderator XDA

Hi all, some of you may have seen my utility over in the de-bricking thread. My goal at this point is to try and make lives easier for everyone I can.

So what I have done is created a script that can be used to handle a lot of common things people may want, and I will continue to add things people request that I think would be easy, and beneficial. I just wanted to make this situation easier for the average person.

You will see how the tool detects you at the default screen, and can refresh it by hitting 0 at any menu to have it refresh ADB/Fastboot and see what mode the kindle is in.

    Currently the tool does:

    • Automatic elevation to root for tool operations.
    • Full root install.
    • Auto detect current bootmode.
    • Auto Detect ADB/Fastboot Online/Offline.
    • Auto download update.zip from Amazon.
    • Auto download and install TWRP Recovery.
    • Auto download and install CWM Recovery.
    • Auto download and install FFF Bootloader.
    • Manage current bootmodes.
    • Manage Read/Write.
    • Install GoogleApps/Market/GoLauncherEX.
    • Lock/Unlock the Wallpaper from being changed.

Currently the tool comes packaged with the drivers required to operate ADB and Fastboot.

Please note: If your device can't be seen in fastboot mode, please make sure to install the drivers packaged with this, as it will show up afterwards. You can use the install_drivers.bat with the device plugged in for this.

Usage should be straight forward for the tool. If you are having issues with something, this tool has a good chance of getting you back on track. This issue was found and fixed using this post: Click me Over at Rootzwiki.

I make no claim that this tool is perfect, but I certainly will do my best to support it as long as people like it.

Here are some screen-shots of it:

    Known Tricks

    • If you end up stuck at the yellow triangle, in KF Utility select Boot Normal, wait for it to say <waiting for device> and then press and hold the power button 20 seconds until the fire turns off, then when its off turn it back on. This sometimes happens, I have yet to find a clean solution :(
    • If you end up stuck with a yellow triangle, do not EVER unplug it. Leave it plugged in. Check the windows drivers to make sure it isnt showing as "kindle" again. Fastboot is different and can cause this.

I tries that in my device manager it says unknow device with yellow mark when i go to update driver it says the latest is already installed

Alright. Let me guide you through this...
-Download the attachment I provide below and place it in somewhere you KNOW where you can find it easily. (I placed it in C:\android-sdk-windows\extras\google\usb_driver(I would recommend doing the same))
    -Go to device manager
-right click on the exclamation mark kindle.
    -Choose update driver software
-choose browse my computer for driver software
-choose let me pick from a list of devices on my computer
    -Then select have disk
    -Then select browse
-direct to where you downloaded the usb driver i attached
    -Select okay and okay

    New version of KFU

I PM'd VashyPooh and he is no longer supporting KFU because he doesn't own a Kindle Fire anymore. So now I will be maintaining this project for now. I am going to make a new thread and release Kindle Fire Utility v0.9.7+. Here is the new thread :) I don't know what should be done with this thread though once it becomes obsolete.

VashyPooh, thank you for what you've done here you've helped me and thousands of people root, install custom firmware, and de-brick our devices. We really appreciate what you've done for us and all the hard work you've put in to this. :good:

Also, thank you for letting me update this because now your utility will be able to help even more people. :)
