Why is the charging port so big?

It is a USB 3.0 port.

You can still use a standard micro usb charger in the right hand part of the port. It'll just charge slower.

I use a USB 2 cable every time. IN fact, I have never plugged a 3.0 cable into my phone and it charges pretty quickly.
