Phone stays on boot animation

Help my friends got a moto g on kitkat and not rooted, he was just using his phone as normal and then it turned off and rebooted but stays on the bootanimation so what can he do to fix this?

I tried selecting recovery but it just rebooted, I think it needs to be fully charged then it might let me go into recovery.

You can try this switch off the phone and hold both the volume buttons together and press power button for 5 seconds and it should get you in the boot menu then press volume down button it will highlight the recovery option and then press volume up button to select it.
