Hi Simonfzhao,
I've got this phone from China as well (U9510E).
Currently having the chinese version 4.0.4 (Build Number: U6510EV100R001CHNC00B122) but I am not able to install "Gmail" or "Google Play" store.

I am not the programmer expert but gadget guy who loves this phone and want to get the maximum out of it, hence I would like to try to put on it the International JB version.
I've re-read this entire thread few times and I've got some feelings that the Huawei is going to upgrade their website with the the JB version soon...

Question: Knowing your resources, is there any chance that this "here say" can become the true anytime soon?

thanks
Marco

---------- Post added at 05:39 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:19 PM ----------

Hi Andy,
I can see you know this phone "from back to front".
After your rooting and getting JB done are you able to install Gmail?
Thanks
Marco

Yes you can get GMail read step "7.5. At this point, you can either flash in the gapps right away, or flash it after rebooting into the OS. I chose to flash it after booting into the OS for the first, but I don't think it will cause any problems. I will be posting the way I did it, and if you guys did it the other way, let us know if it worked or not"

Gmail is part of the gapp and so is market and when you have market you can install gmail too! :D

What you mean by "is there any chance that this "here say" can become the true anytime soon?" The JB update he talked about is the generic one AKA anywhere outside of china. The chinese U9510e already had the JB update hence where these ROM (choice a to c) are based on!

Read it again all the answer is in the post

By the way did you root your phone?

---------- Post added at 09:30 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:16 AM ----------

Did a complete wipe. New boot animation now shows.

Admittedly, when I flashed LUV's, I didn't wipe prior to. :D

Will post with update soon.

EDIT: Bleh, still no go. I'm wondering if it's a region-specific thing now, whereby these ROMs won't work 100% on non-China based ones.

Downloading the stock ROM now.

UPDATE: Aaaand the stock recovery gave a "signature verification" error, and without advanced options, looks like I'm kinda stuck... (phone still boots up and runs the current ROM - LUV's JB - however)...

Hey I am suspecting it having to do with the chinese hand set too. They probably have something slightly different even thought all is called u9510E

I went back to stock twice with no problem.1st go to the huawei web and download the correct firmware 4.0 open the folder and there is a PDF with instruction in it. (something like put this fold to root of sd, power off and then hold volume up and down + power to boot into stock recovery) Use the tool that you flash the chinese recovery with first and choose option 2 ( flash stock recovery). once you in stock recovery and with the right folder in external sd root you will be back to stock with no problem. then root with bin4ry's restore method and you are done!

Clearing dalvik didn't work. :(

Thanks for the updates! Might as wait until they're released, and try wiping entirely then.

Yeah I tried many times with clearing the delvik cache and it didn't work. I think it has to do with the phone.

Darn it, I wish I had a Wind phone to work on lol..I think the way to make your phone exactly like one coming out of China would be flashing the Original Chinese ICS ROM on your phone. I've been reading around that some people have resolved the issue in doing that.

Here is a the latest version of the Chinese Firmware of ICS. Click the Red box in the middle with "下载" in it to download.

I would assume flashing it will just be factory resetting to your original firmware and then using the Custom Recovery flashing tool to flash in the custom recovery and then within the recovery flashing the update file, but in any case that doesn't work. Please try this method below which I found here:

uoioo said:
1. Download the "Jump Switch Upgrade Pack" (Literal Translation lol) and Chinese Market Firmware Pack
2. Format/Clean your MicroSD Card, or use a different MicroSD Card that is clean
3. Create a folder named 'dload' on the SD Card and extract "UPDATE.APP" from the "Jump Switch Upgrade Package" to be placed into the "dload" folder
4. Insert the MicroSD Card into your phone, Go into Settings -> Storage -> Software Update -> SD Card Update. The phone will restart and begin the update. It will restart itself back into the OS after the upgrade process is complete. The entire process will take around 6 minutes.
5. After completing the update, it will show "该版本为跳转升级版本请进行第二次SD卡升级" (Basically meaning that "This is a 'Jump Switch Upgrade Pack', please proceed with the second SD Card upgrade"). After flashing from the International Version to the Chinese Version, many of the applications will popup errors or fcs, just ignore them.
6. Copy the the "UPDATE.APP", this time from the Chinese Market Firmware, and place into the same "dload" folder to replace the original one which we extracted from the "Jump Switch Upgrade Pacakge".
7. Go into Settings -> Storage -> Software Update -> SD Card Update, the upgrade process will begin again. And when this is done, your phone will now have the firmware for the Chinese Markets.
After the phone restarts into the OS, it's default language will be Chinese.

Hey Marco,

I have no direct connection with Huawei so I can't tell you when the office International version will be coming, everything I have posted on this forum are what I learned from this Chinese Forum which is most active with Huawei phones, and they rarely discuss about the international versions. To get updates from Huawei themselves, you'll probably have to email them to check their social networking sites :(

Goodness, if ever there was a case of "RTFM!", this would be it. I didn't realize that I had to extract the UPDATE.APP file from the ZIP, and place it in a "dload" folder within the SD card.

Followed the steps to a tee, and got stock ICS back up and running! Thanks for the heads up, nvana.

Simon, always delivering great info. :) I really wonder if this is the culprit; when you say "resolved the issue", are you referring to the one Nvana and I are experiencing (borked Youtube and Google Play)?

Did some reading around last night, and I didn't realize that Google Play is extremely sensitive to settings:
- if your DNS isn't playing nice, it won't work
- if your APN settings are a tad off, it won't work
- if you look at your phone the wrong way, it won't work
- etc. etc.

I just got in not too long ago, and considering it's 5:24AM, I better head to bed, lol. Will download the Chinese files in the meantime. (Nvana, you're more than welcome to take the plunge if you want, lol.)

EDIT: Screw it, flashing the jump pack now.

EDIT 2: Stock recovery failed, and Chinese custom doesn't recognize the command used when selecting "SD Card Update" from within the menu.
Stock recovery spits out the following:
This phone is secureboot phone.
This phone is LOCK state.
Version list verify fail! <---- apparently this error may pop up if the ROM you're trying to flash is older than the one currently installed
Huawei SD card update fail......

Sorry for being a bit off-topic, but could anyone tell me how the battery life is on the Ascend D1? I've read that the D1 XL has about the same battery life as the S3 and the One X and so on, so is the Ascend D1 battery really bad or what? I'm trying to figure out if the added thickness of the XL is worth it.

LOL at GooglePlay

But yea, I was referring to how certain applications don't work as they are intended too, but I can't seem to find the thread for the life of me :S

Grrr that is very weird..so you're back to stock 4.0.4 right now? It seems like that the bootloader for the International versions are locked and Chinese versions weren't? I would suggest to try to root your phone with the root tool in the other thread to see if rooting tool will help it unlock the bootloader as well

When I have some free time tonight, I'll try to do a flash to the international rom and then flash it back to the Chinese rom.

I have never tried the S3 and the One X, but I think it really depends on how you use your phone.

Hey look at my previous posts I had 3 pictures showing my screen on time, battery life and etc

By the way I love this phone better than s3 I have on laying around at home (the s3) be honest this phone is better to hold and feels natural in hand. Also recently the S3 got 4.1.1 some native apps lags and it's really annoying. Ascend D1 is better in my eye even though it's on ics. But the battery life is much much better on the Ascend D1. I literally only need to charge my phone to 80% for a full day use and still have 20% left at midnight (which was my case yesterday) from time unplugged was about 20 hours with 3 hours screen time. Data/wifi on

Someone should make a flash able zip of the stock 4.0 so we don't need to go through extra steps.

Yeah, I'm back to stock 4.0.4. Ran the tool, but same result. :(

Nvana: Hehe, didn't think anyone would notice. :p

I'm honestly torn with what to do. I have until this upcoming Friday to decide whether or not to keep this phone:
  • I love the feel and heft
  • Like the screen clarity and colours
  • Would rather support an up and coming company

  • The input lag/ glitching (Swiftkey) is a pain in the ass (not sure if this can be fixed via firmware?)
  • LCD ghosting is apparent during motion, when compared to AMOLED
  • A stable, fully functional CM10 may not come until later on, considering the Ascend P1 is still getting ironed out

Question is, to swap out for a GNex (with an extended battery; not a huge fan of its looks) and flash an established/ tweaked JB ROM? Jump ship to Koodo (supporting Telus - meh) and flash CM10 onto a Galaxy S2X (extended battery as well)? Or have faith that somehow Huawei will pull through with their JB ROM, and possibly have LUV's efforts see the light of day with international hardware?

Something tells me to hold onto the Quad...

To be honest I didnt want my gnex any more haha I'm surprisingly OK with just ics and it hasn't fell on my face yet while texting in bed. The gnex and s3 will hit you once in a while. But yes the keyboard is bit annoying however performance wise (even just normal app not games) you will feel the quickness of D1 over the gnex. I have a gnex running 4.2 custom rom right now so I know.

Even though there is not a lot of love for this phone but I can feel the gnex is gonna be too slow soon.

Hmm. Per this thread, could it possibly be the HOSTS file that's mucking everything up? Solution here.

Had a hunch this entire time that it might be a hosts/ ad-blockage related issue (this would explain why Youtube can be accessed by the stock Chinese browser, and not others or even the app itself). Won't be able to test this until I get home from work though.

EDIT: List of blocked websites in China here

Doesn't make sense how Simon has complete access though, but who knows.

Ah the anxiety...

Wish Huawei would just completely unlock the darn bootloader already, would save us from so much trouble!

What kind of input lag are you noticing, you guys keep bringing this up and I dled and tried Swiftkey today and found it pretty smooth. Much better than the stock Keyboard, but too bad it doesn't have Chinese support :(

I agree with nvana here, the gnex is getting outdated lol, if you really want to ditch the D1Q and go for another phone, I would probably recommend looking at the Honor 2, or the Nexus 4. Those two are the most affordable phones on the market right now with Quadcore and 2GB ram. I didn't include XiaoMi M2 because the market price for that phone is through the roofs right now lol

This is so weird that the method doesn't work

SUCCESS!!!1111one

Ran Hosts Editor (free app), and noticed a CRAP-ton of entries! Because there's no "select all" option, I then grabbed SmartHosts.

Applied the host workaround (selected "clean host"), and voila! Pictures are back, and Youtube (website AND app) works.

This just made my night, lol.

Simon, please add this step to the OP. :) Oh, and if you could please post the link to LUV's updated release as well, we'd greatly appreciate it.

As for the input lag, it really only rears its ugly head whenever typing extremely quickly. For instance, try typing the word "testing" over and over. You'll find that at times, if your rhythm is off and you end up hitting two "keys" immediately after one another, that the entire word will delete itself and/ or you'll input a completely different word altogether.

I find that Jelly Bean helps mitigate this issue somewhat, as well as making sure that you allow approx 40 ms (milliseconds) in-between "keystrokes". Rhythm is key in becoming proficient with Swiftkey, and with some practice, one can start approaching full desktop keyboard speeds. :)

If ever there was a reason to stay with Android, Swiftkey - as well as its' distant cousin Swype - would be it, IMO. :)

Nvana, it's the same process we've been using to flash the Chinese ROM(s), but with the added step of "fixing" the hosts file:
  • download SmartHosts from Goole Play (free)
  • tap on "Toggle hosts file" button
  • select "Clean hosts file"

And you're done! Rebooting wasn't necessary either, as the images started loading immediately.

Problem with missing pictures in Google Play can also be solved by installing free application Adaway, which actually will do the same - modify hosts file.

AWESOME!!

Updated OP with your instructions :D

I don't type very fast so I guess that's why I haven't experienced it lol I do love how the auto correct is so much more accurate compared to the Google PinYin though xD

    Hello Everyone,

Below is a tutorial I have compiled and translated from bbs.anzhi.com on how to update your Huawei Ascend D1 Quad XL (U9510E) to the latest version of Android offered by EmotionUI, Jelly Bean 4.1.2:

First of all, I want to give credit where credit is due:
genokolar (aka G大) - Creator/Modder of the Custom Recovery for this, and many other phones coming out of China
Ry09iu (aka R大) - Creator of a Rooted ROM based on EmotionUI B534, which is based on Android 4.1.2
【LUV】 - The board moderator for the D1Quad section of bbs.anzhi, also who's ROM release I used for my phone, but it's upto you to choose which one you want to use

**IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR YOU TO ATTEMPT THIS IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE WITH FLASHING PHONES. IN THE CHANCE THAT YOU BRICK YOUR PHONE, I CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR IT**

**DON'T FORGET TO BACKUP YOUR FILES!!**

Now that the credits and the warning are given, let's get started:

    Required Tools:
    1. Recovery 6.0.1.9: This tool will open in command prompt and will allow you to flash in the Custom Recovery created by genokolar, as well as the stock recovery released by Huawei. Mirror

    2(a).Official ROMs:

    i. Official EmotionUI ROM B551 (Updated January 11, 2013): Release Notes

    2(b).Custom ROMs:

    i. Rooted Version of EmotionUI Rom (Author: genokolar):
    - B534 Download

ii. Rooted Version of EmotionUI Rom (Author: Ry09iu):
    - B534 Download
    - B538 Download

iii. Rooted Version of EmotionUI Rom with HOLO as default Launcher (Author: Ry09iu, Modded by LUV):
    - B534 Download
    - B538 Download
    - B542 Download

iv. MIUI V4.1 - converted from MIUI V4.1 for Honor 2 (Author: Ry09iu):

    3. GApps [Jelly Bean 4.1.2 (Author goo.im/gapps)]: Download

*The roms are hosted in China so the download will be slow, please be patient and your download will be done in an hour or two :)*

**PLEASE PLACE THE ROM YOU WISH TO UES INTO YOUR EXTERNAL SD CARD BEFORE CONTINUING**

    Step 1: Flashing Custom Recovery
    1. Turn-on USB debugging on your phone [Settings -> Developer Settings -> USB debugging]
    2. Plug in your Phone to your computer via USB for it to install the appropriate drivers*
    3. Run recovery6.0.1.4_AscendD1Q.exe
3.5 If your system locale is set to anything other than Chinese, you will get this:
    13537413.png

But what you should see is this:
    grecovery.png

    What that means is: said:
    **-1. Flash Chinese Custom Recovery-**
    **-2. Recover Official Recovery-**
    ##-3.Reboot phone into Recovery-##
    4. Type in "1" and press Enter -> This Recovery Flasher will do what it's made to do and when it's completed, your phone will now have a custom recovery.
    5. The application will automatically close 10 seconds after the Recovery has been successfully flashed.

    Note from Genokolar said:
    1. The development of this Custom Recovery was done through email with Huawei so it may be lacking certain features, a full custom recovery will be released as soon as responds him
    2. This recovery will only flash from an external SD Card, internal SD card flash is not yet supported
    3. At the time of this Custom Recovery being posted, no third-party ROM has been released, therefore it has not been tested <- No longer the case
4.This recovery can be used to Root the EMUI ROMs released by Huawei
    5. When you need to flash back to the original ROM releases by Huawei, or receive OTA updates from Huawei, please flash back the original Recovery

*If the drivers do not install properly, please download the driver attached in this post and install it manually.

    Step 2: ROM Flashing
    1. Boot your phone into the new recovery. (either by starting the application again and selecting option 3, or press and hold the Power Button with Volumn Up)
    2. You will be greeted by the Custom Recovery Screen show below:

    [*] Reboot system now

    [*] Select zip to flash/install

    [*] Wipe data

    [*] Wipe cache

    [*] Backup and restore

    [*] Flash memory/Format

    [*] Advanced setting

    [*] Turn off phone
    3. Scroll to select option 3 (Wipe data), confirm the wipe
    4. Scroll to select option 4 (Wipe cache), confirm the wipe as well

    <-- Back to previous screen
    6. Scroll to and select option 4 (Install from external zip)
    7. Scroll to and select the zip file of the ROM which you have previously downloaded and placed into your external SD Card, confirm the flash
7.5. At this point, you can either flash in the gapps right away, or flash it after rebooting into the OS. I chose to flash it after booting into the OS for the first, but I don't think it will cause any problems. I will be posting the way I did it, and if you guys did it the other way, let us know if it worked or not

    *IMPORTANT NOTE*
When you're booting up your system out from Recovery, you will be asked whether or not you would want your ROM to auto update the recovery, shown below:
    updaterecovery.jpg

[*] Yes - Forbid Auto Update of Recovery

    [*] Cancel - Back
    <-- Return to previous
Please select the one being highlighted in the image, which is option 2 ([*] Cancel - Back). OR CONSEQUENCES WILL NEVER BE THE SAME!

    Step 3: Flashing GApps
    1. Boot into recovery
    2. Scroll to and select option 4 (Install from external zip)
    3. Scroll to and select the zip file of GApps you have downloaded "gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip" or whatever you may have renamed it to, confirm the flash
    4. Reboot into OS
    5. *THE NOTE ABOVE STILL APPLIES, SO HERE IT IS AGAIN*

    Step 4: ALL DONE!
Congratulations, assuming everything was done properly, and everything worked out, now you will have Android 4.1.2 on your Huawei Ascend D1 Quad XL.

Images not showing up in your GooglePlay Store? YouTube not working?
Here is how our very own 12andy fixed the problem:

UPDATE: So using a clear hosts breaks the ability to connect to Facebook (via app and website). It's best to use AdAway, instead.

Nvana, it's the same process we've been using to flash the Chinese ROM(s), but with the added step of "fixing" the hosts file:
    • download SmartHosts from Goole Play (free)
    • tap on "Toggle hosts file" button
    • select "Clean hosts file"

And you're done! Rebooting wasn't necessary either, as the images started loading immediately.
