Test 911 Calls

I am planning on also doing a 911 test here in Minneapolis, MN in the next few days. Any information you would specifically like me to verify?

I'm on nightly update-cm-9-20120331 from March 31.

It took me a little longer than expected because I wanted to be sure of my results before posting. I did some 911 testing in Minneapolis, MN. This was my procedure before calling:

Reboot phone
Let it settle for approximately 5 min
Open google maps to ensure that GPS is functioning for E911 capabilities once I do the call.
Close maps and call.

I did 4 test calls from the Mar 31 nightly, update-cm-9-20120331. On all instances the phone would display the call as going to 911, but it didn't connect (ie hearing the tone indicating connection on their end). After a few seconds I heard two short beeps that seemed to indicate the call failing. At this point the phone would go to the lockscreen and had dropped its cellular connection. On two of these instances the phone was completely frozen on the lockscreen, and the other two times it unlocked but the only way to regain cell connection was to reboot.

I also tried doing a complete factory reset and cache wipe and then reinstalling the March 31 nightly with the same results.

I never received a call back from 911 indicating none of the calls connected.

Its not all a horror story though, I updated to the April 14th update (update-cm-9-20120414), and attempted again with the same procedure. This time I was connected immediately and was able to talk to the operator. It took about 30-45 seconds into the call before the operator indicated that my location was being sent to him and he said that it showed a location that was within 100 meters or so of where I was. I think if we had stayed connected longer my GPS location might have become more precise on my exact location.

For those interested in doing a similar test in your area:
911 operators are very welcoming of having individuals call and test whether 911 is working on their phone. This is a service that we all are paying for as citizens so be sure that you will be able to take advantage of it in an emergency by doing a test in your area. The man I talked to indicated that the best time to call is often between about 5-10 AM because this is when they are least busy but still well staffed. When you call start with something like "Good morning, this is not an emergency, I am just calling to ensure that 911 is working properly on my phone." Most operators will be very welcoming an friendly to these kinds of tests.

Great work CM9 team and, FaultException especially, for keeping all our phones alive and kickin!

I looked at the PSAP Registry file and found:
Code:
5300 | Cleveland Police Department | OH | Cuyahoga | Cleveland | NC

Now what? What does a PSAP of 5300 mean? Is it an extension or is it the number I should call to schedule a 9-1-1 test? Also, if I cannot get a GPS lock would it be pointless to call? Should I be on the latest nightly?

edit:

Wait, are you saying it is OK to call 9-1-1 directly between 5-10 AM? Did you use the PSAP registry Fault talked about a while ago or did you just call 911 directly? Don't get me wrong, I want to help out... but I don't get to get arrested for it!

Perhaps you should do it over...

Ah, lmao. It came up with like a list of all of my apps.

Just restart from the beginning. Accroding to Fault, the commands (to get 2GB of app space) are http://xdaforums.com/showpost.php?p=24553677&postcount=415:
Code:
su
touch /datadata/.nodatadata
reboot

And then use the command f_mulder gave you http://xdaforums.com/showpost.php?p=24891275&postcount=699:
Code:
ls -a /datadata

"ls" means list. The commands by Fault gave us moves your apps to a different place and which makes /datadata not used. Thus, the output of f_mulder's command should do nothing (since there would be nothing to list).

If it works make sure you thank THEIR posts (and NOT mine, which is more of a collage of posts than a response)!

Actually output should show lost+found and .nodatadata ;).
But thank you for gathering things in one place! :)

Can you send me a radio logcat of the call please?

Also what carrier?

I wasn't talking about the GPSLocationProvider, I know that battery drainage that occurs when you turn on the GPS.

Just normal usage, it seems to me that ICS does take up quite a bit more battery than Froyo.

I agree with mulder, without GPS running, ICS (either this CM9 nightly or other CM9 based ROMs like Passion) drains far less than GB (CM7/MIUI), and about the same, IIRC (it has been a while), as Froyo (Bionix).

16 did not want to play nice with Sub Zero today. The two sent me into boot loops. 16 by itself was fine. Maybe the next nightly will jell with SZ.

I came directly to CM9 from Bionix-v. I would venture that without GPS this is actually getting somewhat better battery life. On light use days I routinely have over 60% when I go to bed. Even with GPS.. if it shuts the GPS down properly this is improved.

Anyone had success with this combo? I was about to try it but kind of feeling lazy and waiting for a success story first :)

If you did not already do this, you may want to try flashing the Glitch Kernel first. After flashing Glitch, either do a full reboot, or at least reboot recovery before flashing Sub Zero.

Let us know if that works.

Thanks

Can somebody provide a list af all files needed for GPS to work?
I would like to pull them out from other ROM (from here ) and see
whether this solves the deep sleep problem.
They claim they've solved the GPS problem...
Thanks in advance!

    Please note that there may be intermittent emergency dialing issues and/or GPS/AGPS issues (including GPS daemon crashing, which does not restart) which could hinder location of you in an emergency.

    CyanogenMod is a free, community built, aftermarket firmware distribution of Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich), which is designed to increase performance and reliability over stock Android for your device.

    Code:
    #include <std/disclaimer.h>
    /*
     * I am not responsible for bricked devices, dead SD cards, thermonuclear
     * war, or the current economic crisis caused by you following these
     * directions. YOU are choosing to make these modificiations, and
     * if you point your finger at me for messing up your device, I will
     * laugh at you.
     */

    This thread is for the development of CyanogenMod 9 nightlies for the Samsung Vibrant (aka SGH-T959), the Galaxy S 4G / Vibrant 4G (SGH-T959V) is not supported here. Nightlies are built each night with the very latest code, for this reason, they are extremely experimental and should be avoided by beginners and people who have important responsibilities tied to the usage of their phone.

    CyanogenMod is based on the Android Open Source Project with extra contributions from many people within the Android community. It can be used without any need to have any Google application installed. Linked below is a package that has come from another Android project that restore the Google parts. CyanogenMod does still include various hardware-specific code, which is also slowly being open-sourced anyway.

    All the source code for CyanogenMod is available in the CyanogenMod Github repo. And if you would like to contribute to CyanogenMod, please visit out Gerrit Code Review.

    [font=Calibri,Arial]How to Build[/font]
    First initialize your build environment.

    Now follow the "installing repo" section in this guide:
    http://source.android.com/source/downloading.html

    Now downloading CyanogenMod source:
    Code:
    mkdir ~/Desktop/CM9
    cd ~/Desktop/CM9
    repo init -u http://github.com/CyanogenMod/android.git
    repo sync -j24

    More setup:
    Code:
    . build/envsetup.sh
    breakfast cm_vibrantmtd-userdebug

    Getting proprietary files:
    You must have a copy of CM9 for the Vibrant running on your phone for this part.
    Code:
    ( cd device/samsung/vibrantmtd && ./extract-files.sh )

    Compiling:
    Code:
    mka bacon
    9
    911

    Ok so here is my 911 experience. I live in Denver by the way, and I just emailed the 911 operations manager about doing a test call. She said that is fine just please do it between 8:30 and 11:30 as that is their lowest call volume.

    So the first time I called it clicked, hung up and disabled my entire cell signal. No signal no data nothing. So I rebooted my phone, and google voice informed me I had 2 missed calls from the Denver PD. I tried again and it worked perfectly. I explained I was testing a piece of software, the woman was very friendly said that was no problem and they wouldn't send anyone out. She also confirmed that all the E911 info came up properly on her screen.

    So I'm not sure what to make of this exactly. One time it did nothing though at least my number got through. The other time it worked great. I mean the first time could have been a glitch entirely unrelated to CM. Hard to say. It leaves me ambigious though. If I have a real emergency I really don't want to wait for the phone to reboot!
