Hello, I have recently purchased an Xperia Z from abroad. The problem is, it is carrier locked and I am unable to use my international sim card. If I root it without a bootloader, then flash a custom ROM, will it unlock the sim? I am not used to the Xperia Z, however I have had the Galaxy s2 and Note 2, and both sucessfully unlocked when they were carrier locked. However, it seems that Xperia Z has fewer resources. Is there a way to unlock it?

That will not work. You will have to buy an unlock code from an online seller. That is the only way if you're unable to contact the original network provider.
The network lock status is stored in the TA partition and trying to edit that unofficially in any way will permanently hard brick your phone.
