Okay, I guess you can't get me a screenshot of that appearing message? (That'd be pretty helpful :p)
Did you try uninstalling VTS and deleting all leftovers in the actual VTS program dir? (usually C:\Programs (x86)\Virtuous Ten Studio\)

Did you also try re-installing .net? (seen issues because of broken .net before, so... ;))

after gazilion times here is the screenshot:
Immagine.png

i've already tried to reinstall NET 4.5, completely uninstall VTS ( and the folder in C:\programs (x86)\) reinstall VTS and try to run it, but always the same issue :p

Okay, nothing to do with .net.
Please check whether a SECOND VTS instance is running in the background (--> task manager) and close it if there is one.

i've only one VTS process, killed that and tried to restart vts but same as before D:
( sometimes i hate windows > )

I'm going to bed now, but you are not the only case with this problem. One of my testers had it too, but it magically disappeared.
Will investigate further tomorrow.:good:

Okay so, I have changed a few things and it still works for me :p
Any chance you can come to my IRC (#vts-dev on Freenode) to test it on your own PC?

Would you guys like if I added some option to automatically use the "old"/"original" .r.9.png files after compiling the apk?
Would that be useful for you?

Just wanted to come back and give you a little update on my new method for dealing with the .r.9's.

I decompile them by using this code.

Code:
apktool d -r blahblah.apk

Works great and doesn't mess up the .r.9's however if you want to make xml changes to any of the xml's in the values folders that decompiling method won't work for you. If you are just messing with images it will work great. I tested it on the dialer and it worked great.

BTW. Ibotpeaches has said that he has fixed the .r.9's issue in his next release.

These skins are for the HTC One X or One S. Not for the DNA...
And this is clearly the wrong topic.

Just been looking at the new sense 5 screenshots . After using VTS and seeing what everyone else is developing in the M10 thread i must admit im a bit dissapointed . Maybe HTC should start using VTS as I've seen some themers create some amazing things for our devices .which to me put the "new" sense 5 to shame . Diamondback and team you guys rock , awesome product .

Some cutoff issues

Hello! Just found this AMAZING app.

One little thing: some text is cut off in the file menu (see attached screenshot). I don't think this happened with whatever build was available on 1/19 (I had that one, but I wanted to screenshot the installation process for a guide I'm making, so I uninstalled the 1/19 one and installed today and had some trouble finding the Settings again, haha!). BUT, I might be wrong and it's always been like this.

I'm on a 1920x1080 screen, DPI set to 110% (custom). That DPI might be the issue?

Also, maybe a noob mistake I'm making, but where is ADB pull putting files? I checked \External, nothing. I checked desktop, nothing. I searched for boobs.apk, nothing. :(

Code:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Virtuous Ten Studio\External\ADB>adb pull /system/framewo
rk/framework-res.apk framework-res.apk
4114 KB/s (30188437 bytes in 7.164s)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Virtuous Ten Studio\External\ADB>adb pull /system/framewo
rk/framework-res.apk /desktop
4556 KB/s (30188437 bytes in 6.470s)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Virtuous Ten Studio\External\ADB>[B]adb pull /system/framewo
rk/framework-res.apk boobs.apk
[/B]3320 KB/s (30188437 bytes in 8.878s)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Virtuous Ten Studio\External\ADB>

EDIT: Couldn't find it. Just used "remote" and it worked! :) I think...see issue below, haha:
---

I had a little trouble today:

1) I pushed a modded SystemUI.apk via VTS and my phone in recovery (this easy mod: http://xdaforums.com/showpost.php?p=31321978&postcount=18)
2) Said it pushed successfully, but I'm not sure it did (mod didn't work and SystemUI.apk in phone was original, not new)
3) So, then I pushed SystemUI.apk via ADB and my phone on. Restarted to a missing notification bar. No idea what happened, so I fixed permissions in recovery (to 0644) of SystemUI.apk.
4) Phone entered bootloop -> nandroid back before mod attempt.

It's probably something I've done, but I had two quick questions: 1) Does VTS fix permissions of files before pushing them? and 2) Does VTS remount /system when pushing files to it? Err...3) Does anyone know what I did wrong?

1) Created new project. Uploaded framework-res.apk and SystemUI.apk through "Remote". Used "Keep old signature" because it's a system app and changed smali API to 4.1 (I'm on 4.1.1)
2) Found XML file, edited file via copy/paste, saved it.
3) Hit build, no errors.
4) And attempted to push, starting with step 1 above.

--

Tried again; unable to push with VTS nor ADB! :( Any reason why? I can pull files fine. I'm using a stock 4.1.1, rooted, stock kernel (using adbd insecure). I specifically remount using adb before hitting "push," but even then after 15 minutes of waiting, still "pushing...." :(

Yes you are right, your custom DPI is the problem. In fact it's very hard to make an app fully compatible with different DPI settings.
Even Microsoft's own apps usually don't work too well with higher DPIs.
So unless there aren't any major bugs caused by this (cut off text is not so major for me in this case ;)) I probably won't try to fix it. Sorry ;)

  • When doing adb pull it should probably place the files in the folder where the adb.exe is.
  • No, VTS won't change any permissions when pushing a file. I am not aware that this is needed btw. Never had any problems so far related to premissions.
  • Yes, VTS calls adb remount prior to pushing. You can actually see this in the debug log.
  • Yes, I partly know what's happening. Your problem is a broken signature.
You selected to use the old signature but then edited a file which is protected by this signature.
Therefore Android refuses to load your apk. The half solution would be to sign the apk with a proper signature (ie. use the test signature option in VTS).
However, this will lead to another error. Android will still refuse to load your apk, because its signature is mismatched.
All system apps have to be signed with the same key in order to get loaded by the package manager. Otherwise they will be rejected.
To circumvent this you need to patch services.jar to ignore the mismatched signature.
There are a few tutorials around on how to do that.

Diamondback, imho you should disable it from the beginning in the next version :)
Happens on nearly every apk when having it enabled..

Actually people should rather use a newer apktool version with support for that feature. ;)
But I see this is a common problem and I am currently thinking about a few things to solve problems like this.

Virtuous Ten Studio (VTS) is the ultimate solution for the modification of android applications.
This program allows you to manage entire Android projects within an easy to use and familiar environment.

The intended group of users covers anyone from a themer over ROM devs up to the smali gods known for their awesome mods of existing apks.
The modifcation of smali code is one of the biggest features in VTS. You can easily decompile, edit and recompile any apk or jar file.
However, the application is not limited to smali files. You can edit almost any file found inside an apk or jar.

Virtuous Ten Studio is also the official successor to the highly important M10Tools released 2011 by the Virtuous Team.
You can easily edit any m10 file from Sense apps in order to resize or change them.

Additionally VTS brings support for un- and repacking of boot images (boot.img), a job that previously required a cygwin installation with the dsixda kitchen.
Since VTS' own implementation is a native windows solution, which means you don't need dsixda or cygwin anymore.

VTS has been designed to run on Windows, has been in development for nearly two years and has gone through many stages of testing.

Today VTS is a highly respected, multiple purpose Android IDE (Integrated Develoment Environment) suited for all your reverse engineering tasks.

    User feedback

I've had the pleasure of beta testing and writing tuts for vts and I must say that it is the most useful, well put together program for Android that I've ever used.
I got that excited that I almost pre jacked when I first used it.
It is simply truly fxxxxng amazing.
    Thank you team and testers
Diamondback and everyone involved in this project - thank you! I just started learning (this morning) and
I am already pushing out some alpha mods to the lockscreen thanks to your tool!!
It is a great tool, and I will be using it more as I learn more.
Thank you for the effort you put into this for free, it is amazing. Keep it up! :)
VTS has done amazing, meticulous work that has enriched, massively, the android community.
    Thank you!

As someone that's been using your tools since they were first available, I give a HUGE thanks.
I have, like duce been innovative with m10 modding. There are probably endless options, through mostly trial and error.
The payoff on the end result is always worth it. I'll be more than happy when your next release is out.
I've been using VTS for over 2 months now and it has become the only tool I use. There are tremedous advantages and I'm still finding more. The java source tools are invaluable when working with xmls and smalis. I can now switch between projects with 3 clicks. Great program for modding.
This is probably by far the most useful thing I've used on windows lol
Ohh this is going to be awesome. I'm giddy with excitement. Great job on the app as a whole but with the upcoming m10 editing?
You guys rocked any other editor out of the water. Keep it up :good:
Waw.. this project is being developed very fast.... many changes in the software since the last 2 months when I tried it...

I finally released a working transparent HTC clock widget on One X thanks to the new editor.

Thank you Diamond for this superb tool and updates!

Thanks everyone for this. I decompiled, made an edit, then recompiled my first skin last night thanks to this tool and my helpful huddle mates and teammates.
Great job VTS team and thanks for the many hours of hard work and testing.

    Guides and tutorials

My team and I spent a lot of time on writing detailed and comprehensive guides and tutorials about VTS.
They cover a wide range of topics, from a total beginner level up to complex topics like creating your own HTC Sense skins.

You can find the guides on my website:

Okay, everyone, we are getting ready for release. :highfive:
However, there are a few points everyone has to understand, so I'll publish them prior to the official launch to get a bit more attention. :silly:

First of all, a huge thanks to my beta testers and tutorial authors: (alphabetical order)
    • Dunc001
    • eg1122
    • Fernando sor
    • fisha21
    • Gumby63
    • il Duce
    • jeffsanace
    • mcluvn
    • memnoc
Those guys earned my trust and did the major work on writing all the nice guides and tutorials on the all new VTS website (more on that later).

Let's have a look at the new key features being added in this release:
    • VTS is now able to decompile m10 images. This means everyone can do skins for HTC Sense devices
    • Navigatin in XML documents is much easier now. Simply hold CTRL and click on any reference inside a XML document to jump to the source
    • The content of smali documents gets automatically checked for syntax errors now. Live. And in color. :p
    • We worked hard to provide you useful guides and tutorials on the new website. Additionally, VTS has a (little) help system built in. These are short explanations for a few key features. You can find everything related to "Help" in the new Help tab.
    • It seems nobody saw the potential of the old "Backup" feature, so in this version I added an additional window to easily compare different projects, folders and files. This comes in super handy when porting all kinds of stuff to new apk/jar versions for example.

Okay, so, this is only a super short list of new features, the full list of changes (almost 2 pages long) can be found (as always) here:
    VTS Changelog

    A few additional notes:
    • I changed the license system a bit to help those that had to start VTS with admin rights to find the license. However, to fully use that fix, you need to activate your license in VTS again. Have a look at your license email if you don't remember anymore how to do that.
    • This release should fully support Windows 8. There's a little glitch in the "View tab" where one checkbox is a bit cut off, but I'll fix that with the next version.
    • Speaking of the next version.... This is the last release with support for Windows XP. The next version (the one after the the one that will be released shortly :p) won't suppor XP anymore. So if you are still using XP (shame on you :p), remember to not update after this release.
    • Despite having fixed the admin issue with licenses, it still seems that VTS needs admin rights for certain other things. If something goes weirdly wrong, try restarting VTS with admin rights.
