used the international HTC ONE X S720e for about 30min and no issues with media net. How long does it take for AT&T to send a message if they detect smartphone?

So, any way to change the model name of any given phone to essentially further this thought? With how deep all the rom modding is here, I really don't see why not.

I really want to use this medianet thing..the problem is, most of the international phones I'm looking at don't have U.S. warranty? For those of you that bought non-US smartphones to use with medianet, which stores/websites did you guys end up buying from that would help deal with repairs if something were to happen? TIA

I don't own Samsung phones and don't have a list. From the information in this thread, it works with galaxy s. I read it on the forum that galaxy s ii can use the method too. But don't take my word for it. Google or search xda for 'samsung efs folder' and you will see people talking about how to backup and restore that folder. In your case, you will want to backup and them delete.

Since the warranty in most cases are offered by the manufacturer, I doubt there are stores offering warranty on international models. The only unlocked phones with warranty are those officially released by the manufacturers in the country you live in. In us, I can only think of Nokia and maybe the nexus line.

I would buy a phone without warranty if the price is low enough to justify the risk. I would value a one year warranty to be worth fifty dollars on a five hundred dollar phone.

It's easier to change phone name than imei. For android , I think it's in build.prop file. But it should nt matter to the carrier. They only detect model by imei. I know this first hand, because when I flashed the desire hd rom on my inspire hd. The phone shows desire hd in the about page, but AT&T never failed to tell I have inspire hd.

HTC Radar gets HSPA+

4 meg downloads and 2 meg uploads in Washington DC area.

---------- Post added at 11:34 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:26 PM ----------

It had been working fine until I downloaded HTC Connection app from app store. Whatever it did, it made all the AT&T bloatware available in the Marketplace. It also blocked Internet sharing. There was nothing I could do to fix that and I had to reset the phone to get it working again. So, for win mo 7.5 folks with HTC phones:
1) disable all auto updates. Do updates with your SIM out if at all
2) don't download/enable HTC Connection app - it will lock features on your phone per the wishes of your carrier. You can manually update the APN to get data and tethering to work.

Using a Titan II and I have medianet. Picked up a newer sim and inserted it into the phone. 4G reception, but data did not work until I added an APN (wap.cingular). Internet is working now, but MMS and tethering is not. I was previously using an xperia play r800a and everything worked including MMS and tethering.

Noticed that Windows 7.5 mango doesn't really give you many options to edit APN settings. Hmm, maybe I'll head back to xplay...

Was it an AT&T branded Titan II? Where did you get it? I was looking at that, but didn't want to get bumped from my unlimited medianet plan.

I would guess it came from UK/Canada. I get almost all my phones from Canada.

I've never had an issue with warranties. I also don't keep a phone for more than 1-3 months either...

Expansys USA does provide a warranty through them though.

It's pretty much random. Seen people be able to get away with it for less then a few minutes to the most a little over a month. Even when I go change out phones it took them a long time to figure out (5 weeks).

As a fellow medianet user, thanks a ton for this compiled list.

Here's my two cents:

I'm on a Desire a8182, I didn't have any problems with AT&T until they started doing sweeps for iphone users last year (spring/summer 2011). During that time I got a text message one day saying "illegal sim swap" and my data was disconnected the next day. I wasn't using that much data, on average maybe 1gb per month usually less.

After some research I found out that they were confusing the IMEI for a broadband adapter, same thing was happening to some other Desire users. After I called up, I played dumb and told them I had a regular dumb phone, after some arguing on my end they reinstated my data.

Now with the release of the Nexus on Google Play, I'm very tempted to switch but I don't know if I'll get an "illegal sim swap" text message again.

Anyone have a similar experience?

Steps:
1) Root Samsung Android Device
2) Buy and Install Root Explorer
3) Browse to the EFS folder
4) Backup all contents to cloud/email/pc/mac
5) Delete all contents of EFS folder
6) Reboot
7) Enjoy any type of data plan

I just did this to a samsung infuse and my phone wont connect to the network at all, when I copy the efs folder back everything is fine. Can anyone help

I wrote this up for people interested in seeing what they could purchase currently out there on the market without being bumped up for an AT&T plan.
This list probably doesn't concern most people on XDA on Tmobile and CDMA carriers, but for those looking for a savings this is where it's at.

    Code:
General disclaimer: I'm not responsible if you get bumped up on a smartphone plan.
Please do proper research and googling and make sure you have the right phone before putting your SIM in.
If you get bumped to a smartphone plan, be prepared to contact your AT&T CSR with the IMEI of a dumbphone and ask them to set it for you.
Ask questions here or check with the specific forums before attempting if you're not sure.

What the AT&T dumbphone / medianet/family plan is for:
Some rundown and pricing details in this post: [URL]http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?p=26201562#post26201562[/URL]

A data plan used for 'dumbphones' and IMEI of phones not stored in AT&T's IMEI database,
which is not limited to android and smartphones. Technically, any phone capable of retrieving
UMTS/3G/HSPA 850mhz/1900mhz bands is capable of accessing this service.
Whether or not the device is stored in AT&T's database is another question.
This lets you keep using the AT&T service without having to add another contract,
or continue using an existing one without upgrading.

    There are 4 options:
    - Grandfathered MediaNet users pay $10/month for unlimited data for one line.
    - Current Regular single line users pay $15/month for unlimited data for one line.
    - Current Family plan users can pay $10/month for 1 line with unlimited data with the bundled with $30 messaging unlimited for all lines.
    - Current Family plan users can pay $15/month for a single line for unlimited data only.

    This allows end users to:
    A) Continue to get an unlimited service for cheaper (although we speculate there is a threshhold before they start watching you)
    B) Pay $10-15 less a month
    C) Keep your old plan, no subsidized prices for new phones
Generally, any of the following world carriers should release phones that are on their UMTS(3G) 850 and 1900 MHz bands, making it compatible in the USA for 3G: Rogers (Canada), Telus (Canada), Fido (Canada), Bell (Canada), Virgin Mobile (Canada), Sasktel (Canada), movistar (South America), Claro (South America). It's important to know that the phone you get has radios for the UMTS 850 UMTS 1900 bands, since AT&T operates on both frequency sets in the USA.

How to check if your device is flagged in AT&T IMEI Database: there are 2 ways, both end up on the same page.
If you just recently got flagged (text message saying smartphone plan) then you need to wait a set amount of time before it will show up in OLAM. Maybe around 1-2 days

    1) Go to http://wireless.att.com
    2) Log in to your account thru OLAM (On-Line Account Management)
    3) Check if your phone shows up with a generic icon or actual photo (see below)
    Fs12XhK.png

4a) Method 1 (thanks to lovem): Go to http://www.att.com/devicehowto/
5a) On the top left where it shows your current device, see if you have a generic phone icon. To check your other lines click "Change" and you will see your list of devices.
6a) If your device shows up as "unknown unknown", your IMEI has not been detected by AT&T.
    7a) If you're undetected, profit. $$$

4b) Method 2 (thanks to sucss): If you already have a phone/line identified in the database (with photo), click the phone.
5b) Click "View Tutorials for this device"
6b) Click "Change" and look for the phone/line
    7b) If you're undetected, profit. $$$

I think instead of putting a list of working phones, I can just put non-working phones on the front page. That way the newcomers know what doesn't work, and they can PM for the listing.

I'll start working on it soon.

I'm starting a private list. If you'd like to add a phone or update a current phone, just message me.

Only requirements for the list are:

200 posts or you're a long time member.
Don't share it(if anyone else wants it, tell them to PM me).

It's a Google Doc stored on my Google Drive, so updates to the list will be available immediately.
