Now I'm assuming (and pretty sure) data connection in terms of speed order goes - E, G, 3G, H, 4G
Is that right?

If so why when on 'G' does nothing load but on 'E' stuff does load (slowly of course)

It's doing my head in

As above. G is lower than E
Mine sits on H and changes to H+ when using data.
Yours will be sitting on G and using E for data

The order is G(GPRS), E(edge/2G), 3G, H(HSPA), H+(HSPA+), (DC-HSPA+)(your phone won't show this), 4G(LTE)

Ah so that makes sense! I had it backwards in my head.

Still nothing ever loads tho on it. Presumably because it's just pointless it's that slow

I'm with O2. Their 2G is painfully slow its laughable. I can't load web pages on it. Their 3G provides me with an incredibly fast 0.2mbps and it'll be years before I see O2 4G anywhere near I live.

I can't wait to move to Three. Their coverage where I live seems to be good, and they're planning to bring 4G to two main towns < 20 minutes away from me so thumbs up for them.

3 seems to be the best for me.
With o2 I also got less than 0.2mbs download.
Vodafone wasn't much better.
Usually get about 4-5mbs on 3.
Had to go to Leeds for work at weekend and picked up the tiniest 4g signal (0-1 bars) and was getting 15mbs can't wait for LTE rollout in my city this year

G = 1g

Correct me if I'm wrong. :)
Okay, here is your correction:

GPRS is the method of transfering data packets via GSM, which is the 2nd Generation network replacing the analog first generation.
There was no data connection possible in first generation (maybe analog modem).

So if you would like to keep your naming, GPRS would be 2G, while you could call EDGE to be 2.5G.

UMTS is 3G while improvements as HSDPA&HSUPA is often called 3.5G

I don't think WAP was possible in first generation. I know it from back when Nokia had great phones like 3210. I had a Sony Ericsson and often pushed the WAP button without noticing... But that was definitely 2nd gen. network.

I had a 3210. It had no WAP. I remember my House mate first getting WAP in about 2000.

Whether WAP was first gen or not, below is what I know:

GPRS = 2G (first simultaneous voice and data network)
Edge = 2.5G
3G = 3G
HSPA / HSPA+ /DC-HSPA = 3.5G
WIMAX /LTE = 4G

So my assumption was that WAP was 1G.

But after a Google of it, they're calling 1G analogue so everything from the introduction of SMS Through WAP to GPRS was all on the 2G network... so is dubbed "2G" however wap of course is massively inferior to GPRS which was often likened to ISDN for cell phones

    Hello,

    G is slower... The order is:

    G = 1g
    2g
    E = 2.5g
    3g
    H+ = 3.5g
    4g

    Correct me if I'm wrong. :)

    GPRS is 2G. 1G was GSM WAP
