Just rooted. In order to do that I was forced to remove the antivirus (avira) and firewall (comodo) from pc. The second one, also if stopped, was still forbidding in background the tool to do its tasks. Installed the gapps on the latest release of stock firmware (vers. 15). Before rooting i made all updates from ZTE. Everything is working fine but i can't enter in recovery pressing volume up/on buttons. If I try the phone hangs up with black screen and i'm forced to remove battery to wake it up. Instead the recovery starts correctly and works without any problem if I use the pc tool.

Press the volume up and power button at the same time, when the phone vibrate, free the power button, but still press the volume up, until it enter recovery

tried several times. phone vibrates, but the screen remains all black. By the way I found that my screen is made by TIANMA and also during the flashing process (rooting and installing recovery) i've seen strange screen behaviours. Anyway I still can enter in recovery only from PC tool.

forgotten to say that the situation was the same also before flashing. I tried to enter in the stock recovery with the same results.

it seems i've solved the problem installing from the store the quick boot apk. With this i'm able to reboot in recovery without any problem.

Rooting/CWM Recovery leading to black screen? Try this!

Hi everyone,

Many of you have been trying to root/ install CWM on your ZTE S291, but encounter blank screen.
The problem is although Android ADB driver is installed and you are able to give
successful adb commands to phone, the fastboot interface driver is not installed.
So when phone boot into fastboot, there is no driver and so making it go into black screen/ no response.

You can verify this when in fastboot mode by going to
Start->Computer->right click Properties->Device Manager. There under unknown device,
you will see Android device

To solve this problem: In fastboot mode use USB Driver Tool,
click on Android device, select Change driver type and select Android ADB Driver.

Now in cmd prompt, type fastboot devices. Your device should come up.
Now you can issue fastboot flash recovery "path to recovery.img"

Regards and best of luck!

I've done, more or less, what you described.
Using quick boot rebooted the phone in bootloader. With the blank screen i checked how the device was recognized by my pc. Under Android ADB i find something like Google fastboot etc. The device seems to be correctly recognized and the driver seems installed. Then I give the fasboot devices command and the terminal says that the device ID ETC... was fastbooted, but the screen in still black and nothing appens.

- you can use quickboot app from play store to go into fastboot mode
- Since you are able to see device id on "fastboot devices" command it means fastboot interface driver
is installed. Never mind the screen blank.
- Now you need to flash CWM recovery image using fastboot flash recovery
You can use recovery_cn.img from below link. (Read recovery.bat to see how it works)

Root method from the first post do not work
Actually it renders phone unusable (freezing, restarting etc)
Is 360 the only one method that works with thisphone?

EDIT
After applying this method on second computer, my touch stops responding :(
Phone turns on but I'm on lock screen (cannot unlock due to touch not working)
Any idea how to restore original firmware to this phone?

EDIT2
To restore touch function, you have to replace corrupted boot.img using ADB (my software version is B11, i used boot.img from B17)
If you want to root, it's better to use english CWM (which includes root) than using methods posted on XDA

Did you install chinese recovery from first post or only tried to root?
Install chinese recovery from first post, then install english recovery with root included (choose second opton in chinese recovery, it's "install zip from sdcard" if I remember correctly):
http://pan.baidu.com/s/1mgMMD8c

When you have english CWM, install CM12.1 by alexeei:
https://cloud.mail.ru/public/4cC2CexW9PcD/P897A20-ota-eng.alexeei_28.12.15.zip
And install gapps, choose correct version here:
http://www.android.gs/download-install-and-flash-google-apps-for-android/

Alternatively:
Apply boot.img from B17 through adb and touch control will work fine

Alternatively 2:
Download original B17 soft and install in stock recovery
Probably this is B17 software, but I don't remember (anyway - I've used boot.img from this rom to restore my touch control):

lost touch

Hi,

I have a problem with not working touch in screen. I have done a root and uploaded Chinese recovery (by application from ZTE). After that I lost the touch. So I uploaded new Android Slim ROM B08: s291-b08_update-0531, but problem was the same. I returned to basic recovery (using ADB protocol in Chinese recovery and ZTE application). Touch didn't work. I was trying to upload boot.zip file with new boot.img file which fixs problem with touchscreen. But now I can not upload any .zip file. When I am trying I have message: upload failed. I can't connect to phone from ZTE application because usb debugging mode is off and can't change PC connection options because touch doesn't work.

Do you have any ideas how fix that touch, or change recovery?

Regards

I lost touch after installing some older version of rom.
Just used backup to return to previous version and everything worked fine.

If you do not have backup, maybe you should put some cm 12.1 on your sd card via pc or other phone and instal it through recovery.

    Hi, folks
I want show you a tutorial how to easy do ROOT and install RECOVERY and then gapps , with a simple tool.

The tool is in Chinese, but you need only to click few times.

    Let’s start:

    1. Plug your phone to your PC and on the phone choose the option Install driver:

    EDIT: REUPLOADED SCREENSHOTS

    Danger ahead

    Hello everybody,

I wanted to warn you, I followed this guide and after doing the root procedure my phone is bricked DEAD.

Won't turn on, won't do anything, not even charghing when power plug is connected, I just killed my phone after about 30 minutes of ownership. :/

PLEASE WAIT A LITTLE BIT BEFORE DOING THIS.

My phone is a grey ZTE Grand S II (NBA Edition, from what I see on the box...).

Does anybody here have an idea HOW I could get this back from the dead?

    *** UPDATE ***

I was able to make it work!! Sorry for sounding so alarmed before... I was in panic mode.

If this doesn't work at first please try it on another PC, or switch USB port, and make yourself a big favor by using this:

    http://visualgdb.com/UsbDriverTool/

to install your Android ADB driver.

The ZTE Grand S II (S291) is a GREAT handset and I hope the devs get interested because it's one of the BEST prcie/value ratio around...

Got it for 280 € on Aliexpress...

    Thank You.

    S.
    1
Yes, that's what I did! Then the software asked me to replace adb_usb.ini and perform adb kill-server, which I did...

    C:\Windows\system32>adb kill-server

    C:\Windows\system32>adb devices
    * daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
    * daemon started successfully *
    List of devices attached
    d70ec4e0 device

I can confirm USB debugging is enabled and my connection mode is "Connect to PC software".

I checked and re-did everything twice and still, adb reboot bootloader makes my phone die: screen black, no lights and won't even turn on unless I remove the battery...

If I'm doing something wrong, I really don't know what it is :(

    Ideas?

    S.

I really don´t know :/ , when you can try it on another PC...

    Hi Jozco,

sure you're right, I edited my post 'cause all is doing good now, this phone blows my mind!

The only issue I'm having is that Google Sync isn't updating my contacts... so I had to migrate them manually from my old phone, is it like that for you?

    Thanks!

    S.

I really don´t know but i think yes i had duplicite contacts , because i updated from .vcf file from my old phone.
BTW you are right the phone is just great
    1
I solve the problem ! When my phone shut off i goes to windows driver and install the driver adb again ! You have to do that two times, before lauch "中兴天机S2一键ROOT_Recovery" and when you phone shut off.
