I'm a mechanic, so not much use during the day, but I'm really impressed after having the myTouch 4g barely getting 2 hours screen time in a 12 hour time period.

Yes mobile data takes more battery than WiFi, but since you have francos kernel not much more battery drainage

Had the phone about 12 hours. Boot loader unlocked, rooted using xylon and harsh kernel. battery is excellent in my opinion. I'm on T-Mobile 80% and WiFi 20% of the time and have been using and abusing this thing with gaming, tune in radio, uploads on my 100gb of box space;), setting adjustments, fine tuning pie, undervolting, the list goes on. It will never get what my atrix HD with a maxx battery got, but I knew that. The development alone for this phone far exceeds the extra two hours of screen time my atrix HD got with zero development. This phone is fun, simply put. I will be buying the orb charger for home, and leaving my regular charger at work. People are entitled to opinions, but some negativity about this phone is just uncalled for. For the price this phone CAN NOT be beat. This is my third LG android device, all I can say is, I'm done with HTC, Samsung, and moto. Moto with the exception that they allow boot loader unlocking, but until then I'm staying here.

4.2.2 is out for some nexus devices ( not Nexus 4). It would be nice if the rev optimized the battery.

I saw something the other day showing that the Nexus 7 now lists 10 hours of battery life instead of 8 as of the 4.2.2 update. So anything is possible.

If google could kill the wakelocks and also prevent the phone from running so hot, battery life would improve tremendously.

My nexus 7 sleeps better that's for sure. the battery line is flatter than before during inactive periods. still waiting for a few cycles to see if it's improved. 4.2.1 caused my average screen on time to drop about an hour which really sucked.

Nexus 4 on idle time

OK. first of good morning.

Today ill post images of my nexus 4 running stock everything. But instead of posting normal usage and stuff today i decided to post just idle time with a slight emailing.

Here are the conditions:
Wifi ON (data running in background)
Brightness auto
... and thats it.

Thing is i disconected cellphone early in the morning. i have wifi at home, then i drove to my job. Car has wifi as well. when arrival to job there is wifi as well. so technically wifi was avilable at all times. i answered 3 business emails that took aproximately 8 minutes and other 3 minutes of screenshots and just checking the phone.

So the results are 6 hr 52 min from 100% to 90%. almost 7 hours per 10% on stock everything. No Franco no nothing. Screen time during this lapse is 11 min. as a side note i would like to say that battery drain remains for me constant from 100-10%. from 10-0% battery holds even a little longer. But for numeric purposes i will consider that all this done in 10% i will tenfold and proyect some numbers:

100-0%: 68 hours (2.8 days)
Screen time: 1 hour 40 min.
Wifi whole time

This is what basically a person "could" get if they only use wifi all the time and use screen for 1 hr 40min MAX for light tasks as emails. Now i wont do the test myself because my job requires me to take pictures and use autocad on field, so for me that battery time is imposible, but these numbers might be of some use to somebody maybe.

Later on i will introduce 1 hour talk time and recalculate these number down to 90% battery. but for now i just recorded what happened naturaly this morning and proyected some theorical numbers.

Hope this is a guide or helps some one.

EDIT: This is on 4.2.1. Later on i will redo this on 4.2.2.(not here yet)

Nexus 4 on idle time.... Kinda

So i continued my day and my douche friends woke up at as always we started texting like crazy. more emails came in and i had to call a client for a couple of minutes.

So... down to 80%. Results:

9 hr 10min on 20% battery.
Aditionaly i leave for lunch to a local restaurant for about an hour and no more wifi, so thats 1 hour on hspa+, which as you can see jumps to 3g from now and then.
27 min of screen time.
12 min 43s of voice calls.

At this point i will consider this as "average usage" and i will now proyect battery five-fold to see theoretical numbers:

100-0% 45 hrs (1.9 days)
2 hrs 20 min of screen time
Wifi on with a bit of Data time
1 hour of voice calls
Lots of texting included with those 2 hours 20 of screen time

So its 1:12 in the afternoon. if i do go to do field work and take piictures then i will not be able to continue every 10%. otherwise i may post more as time passes by.

For now, this is my usage as of 20% in 9 hours of battery, everything stock. Hope this helps.

Hi,

I'm an Paranoid Android 3.00 with nova launcher and it is so freaking awesome! I love the possbility to customize every detail, this makes it really unique.

This is my realistic battery profile from 100% to 10% I mostly listened to music and browsed the web and mail... I think it is ok, I need to load it about every 24 Hours - when using it quite a bit.

Nexus 4 on idle time.... Kinda Less

Continuing my day, here the update:

down to 70%

11h 2min on battery
47 min on screen
wifi, LOTS of messaging and emails. google updates for 2 apps

so furthermore new proyections for full discharge. 70% would be 3.33-fold multiplier

100-0% 36.63 hours (1.53 days)
2 hours 35 min on screen time
Wifi on with a bit of Data time
1 hour of voice calls
Lots of texting included with those 2 hours 35 of screen time

As percentages drop by, the proyection start to converge on real life usage and real battery drain.

More updates to come.

I'm on
Stock ROM
Franco kernel r71,rooted

Been getting 4-4 half hours screen time a day when mainly browsing, bit of temple run and a few forum apps.I've had the brightness set to the half moon on the utilities widget(about30-40%) and am pretty sure the kernel is getting me better OST than the stock one.
Tooj pictures but don't think I can post em yet cos I'm a noob to this forum

Battery drain continues to be quite poor without WiFi. This is with a fair number of applications syncing in the background. Drain was about 5% an hour overnight with no active usage. The fourth image shows change in battery drain when changing from WiFi to HSPA with effectively no active usage or screen on time.

Edit: Save for the fourth image, these are from 4.2.2

hi there.
i think i got a problem with my battery endurance.
it's on screen time lasts ~2h 20 mins pretending on what i do. on the attached screenshots you can see. i used wifi and most of the time whatsapp.
brightness is set to automatic. gps, bluetooth and mobile data are turned off. sync is just enabled to sync chrome bookmarks.
i'm using aokp_mako_jb-mr1-build-1 and franco-kernel r50.

do you have any suggestions? i dont think this on screen time is ordinary.

if there is another thread where i should post this or if you need some more informations, please let me know!
sorry for my bad english, i did the best i could.

Hope we'll get some real indication of 4.2.2 battery usage tomorrow :). Really want to see if it's been improved or not and if so, how much so.

Hi there!:) I thought we needed one of these threads to get a clear image of how the phone performs IRL.
We'll all heard rather varying reports from the reviews, some good other disastrous...

    1. Please post your impressions of the battery here.
    2. Please be specific about how you've used it during the day.
    3. Screenshots of the battery settings are most welcome.
    4. Show image of screen-on time as well as the list of apps (thanks to Shadehh)
    5. Brightness, is it auto? custom? If custom, %? (thanks to Shadehh)
    5. 3g / WiFi on? If yes for how long? (thanks to Shadehh)
    7. Haptic feedback? (thanks to Shadehh)

.... whatever else comes to mind.

TIP: best would be to simply download 'GSAM Battery Monitor' from the app store and make a screenshot and post the results (it's the most simple and fastest way ) - Shadehh

    Thank you!

    Hi

Push notification *is* constant connection. The other possibility is polling in intervals.

Push notifications isn't the same as a constant connection and is often very power efficient, certainly when using Google Cloud Messaging which is on by default in Android phones.

In order to have push notifications the phone creates an open TCP connection to the server, then the phone deep sleeps normally. The Wi-Fi or Cell modem is responsible for holding the TCP connection open and raising an interrupt to wake the phone if the connection receives any packets. So during this wait, the phone is using no extra power and is in deep sleep. An open TCP connection usually times out after 10 to 15 minutes when it is no longer valid and can't be sent any data so the phone will wake, establish a fresh TCP connection then sleep again.

To send us an email, the open TCP connection is sent a few packets of data, this raises an interrupt, the phone is woken, checks the data it was sent which in this case says "New email arrived" then the phone does a normal PULL of email from the server. After the email is received a new TCP connection is left open and the phone sleeps again.

The issue with this kind of push notification is the TCP time-out value, which is network specific. It takes resources for a network to keep track of these long open connections so some networks will have a lower time-out value, which might be as little as 30 seconds or a minute so your phone is constantly chattering to the network in order to keep an open TCP connection, this will hit battery power compared to polling with a reasonable time delay. Typically mobile phone networks have lower time-outs by default as they typically see more dead connections and need to release resources used holding on to them.

However with an Android phone and any data connection, it always has a push notification connection set up with Google servers, which is why if logged in to our Google account on the phone we can visit the play store on a computer and remotely install applications. This same push messaging service is used for all Google applications including Gmail and so is using no extra battery if we choose to use it. This messaging service can be used by third parties as well, giving us push on other applications also with no extra battery hit.

The best thing if we want push but without any extra battery drain is use Gmail (which is why there is no polling option with the default Gmail application). Also most/all mobile networks will configure their networks with the maximum keep live time for open TCP connections to the Google messaging service as they know these connections will not be dead connections but in use for push and it saves unnecessary chatter on their networks.

Corporate or other Exchange accounts use the same TCP open connection mechanism for push notifications but will be setting up an extra open connection back to which ever server is hosting the service, but of course these will not be known to the mobile phone company and time-outs will not be optimised, in addition corporate firewalls and routers often are not optimised for these open TCP connections either. This means we can see a considerable hit in battery power when using Exchange accounts for push as the phone is waking every minute or so to maintain an open TCP connection which is being closed on a very quick time-out, in which case switching to polling would be better. It has been this issue with poorly configured networks within some companies giving push a bad name in the battery department.

Note that polling uses more power than renewing the open connection on a time for time basis. So polling every 15 minutes will use a lot more power than renewing the TCP connection every 15 minutes. This is because polling requires the phone to exchange more data as it has to log into the remote service using our credentials and do a pull to see if new data or not.

So in summary, using Google Gmail or other Google services with push uses no extra battery in Android phones. Using other third party services with push notifications (if they don't use Google Cloud Messaging) can be very variable in battery usage.

    Regards

    Phil
