Is it worth downgrading to this from an ICS ROM? If so, how would I go abouts doing it? I'm really interested in the attention this ROM is getting so late in the Android season, I'm curious, is this one of the best Froyo Roms? Even on a 95% fast/stable/good battery life ICS rom, it keeps lagging. I'm just getting tired of looking for that "perfect" rom. The thing is, I dont' even care about Aesthetics of the ROM, I just want one that will last me all day, that can perform smoothly, and that doesn't force close everything /gripe.

I would have to say this is the best Froyo rom. Very close to stock with bloat removed. When I downgraded to it from ICS (after a failed upgrade), I Odin'd to stock then rooted/cwm, then flashed cognition. (feel free to correct me if I forgot a step).

Do yourself a favor. Come back or stay on this ROM. I don't think the Captivate hardware is designed to handle any of the newer versions of Android. The new features are great but the lagging is not even tolerable.

This is the last best ROM created for this unit.

lol wut??
I don't know what roms you guys have been running. Yes this rom was great and is still great, but there are lots of new roms not necessarily ICS but also GB roms which are faster than this, stable and with better features.

Well according to me AOKP will be a good one, lots of features, also try out CM9 the nightlies have started and it is quite stable.
But be absolutely sure to follow proper instructions before flashing so you don't end up with bootloops.

AOKP B32, runs absolutely like _BUTTER_. Here's the thing though:

1) DO NOT RECOVER YOUR APPS from GB -> ICS. COMPLETELY REINSTALL ALL YOUR PERSONAL APPS, and manually recover data ONLY to apps you care about.

2) When I first flashed from CM7.2 RC0 to CNA 0.5, the lag was horrendous. I then flashed around and then I went to AOKP. I ran various benchmarks, and found that CNA with NO Apps recovered actually runs fast than AOKP. However with AOKP + Glitch kernel set to GlitchAssV2, and Force disable Screen cache (all within the built in Rom Control).

Bottom line -> ICS apps need to be reinstalled and re-backed up FROM ICS.

GB-> ICS is a HUGE framework change. It's possible you are also getting force closes from filling up your datadata partition.

3) Flash the datadata fix in my signature.

Sounds like a lot of "hammering" to get it right. Probably OK for people who like to tinker. I like to install something, then use it...thus, Cognition.

Need the Congnition Zip

I was looking to re-flash Congnition 4.5.3 as it seems like my phone has decided to simply come to a complete slow down a few minutes after booting and then becomes unresponsive or seems to do a soft kind of reboot.

Anyways I don't seem to have the Congnition 4.5.3 zip and the link on page 1 is dead, can someon share the zip file or point me at a link?

Thanks,
Tim

Amen, brother. I thought I must be crazy - all these awesome looking new roms on here and NONE of them are stable for me! I dunno if it's because I have an older Captivate or what, but even the official KK4 gingerbread update from Samsung gave me serious issues and just seemed rather unrefined overall compared to Cog4.5.3 and other KB1 builds. I'll take a rock solid froyo rom over buggy gingerbread or ICS builds any day.

Well you answered part of my question. I was just curious, this whole time you seemed to be against Cognition. "Oh It's a really great ROM, but its far from the best" I thought maybe you had some GB Roms to Compare to ICS roms. But you seem to be on the road towards ICS (which is okay, I like it). Only, I would like to know why these other people are hooked on Cognition, when it's 2.2, basically asking: for those of you that switched to Cognition, why did you do it? And why is it better in your eyes.

Because its just a tweaked debloated Froyo rom. Its epic rom. Used this rom close to a year back in the day. Its simple and offer almost no issue since it's literally finished dev. DG had nothing else to do to it. Hell If I wanted to set someone up with a solid and stable rom and that person doesn't like to "tweak" with the phone and just want it to work and work well, this is the rom that I would use.

The only thing that sucks about Froyo is graphics. Everything involving graphical experience is slow. This includes some games, lockscreen, etc. Has anyone noticed how much lag there is when unlocking the phone from the lockscreen? Its the only reason I'm on ICS now :/

Ran this like a year ago and it definitely was one of the best I897 froyo roms due to DG's awesome work. Having said that though it has nothing on fusion ICS when it comes to lag, graphics or performance and I'm running a build 1007 captivate that's close to 2 years old. Sadly though, Fusion is no longer being developed. At least cognition development stopped because it was great and done.

    Full Log: http://designgears.github.com/cognition/log.txt

Reset your ringtone and notification sounds after updating!! They might be set to silent or something totally random.
Make sure you backup either with Titanium Backup or Backup from recovery before flashing. Sometimes the update process will cause forecloses and/or bootloops and it is impossible for me to detect every scenario in which that might happen.

It is pretty self explanatory as far as updating / installing 4.21. In all four cases, mentioned below, use the recovery menu to install the zip you choose using the 'Install zip from SDCard' option (do not use Rom Managers GUI).

IF YOU ARE ON 4.2 right now and you DONT want overclocking, install the non OC patch (labeled in bold as "Kernel Only / Update from 4.2 Only (Non-Overclocked)". Use the CWM version which is the top most link under the bolded text.

IF YOU ARE ON 4.2 right now and you WANT overclocking, install the OC patch (labeled in bold as "Kernel Only (Overclocked)". Use the CWM version which is the top most link under the bolded text.

IF YOU ARE NOT ON 4.2 (earlier version of Cog, coming from a different rom or stock) and you DONT want overclocking, use the full rom (labeled in bold as "Full Rom (Non-Overclocked)". Use the CWM version which is the top most link under the bolded text.

IF YOU ARE NOT ON 4.2 (earlier version of Cog, coming from a different rom or stock) and you WANT overclocking, use the full rom (labeled in bold as "Full Rom (Overclocked)". Use the CWM version which is the top most link under the bolded text.

Make sure all your contacts are synced with Google and any data on your phone (pictures, movies, music, documents, etc.) is backed up OFF THE PHONE (ie. not in contact with the phone - DONT keep it on the external sd card and leave the sdcard in place when you flash - just to be safe, remove the external sd card if you are using one).

If you are on stock, you need to root, install Rom Manager, Titanium Backup, do a nandroid backup of your phone, do a Tit backup of your apps, use Odin to restore to JI6 stock, reroot, re-install Rom Manager and Clockwork Recovery and use the recovery menu to install the zip you downloaded. This is a very brief summary and there are more detailed instructions available elsewhere.

If you are already running Cognition or other custom rom, make sure all your apps are backed up using Titanium Backup (or other preferred app backup tool). Then, make sure you have Rom Managers clockwork recovery installed on your phone (or if you are already running Cognition, do NOT reflash clockwork recovery as Cognition uses its own custom recovery menu - from my understanding anyway). Reboot your phone into Recovery mode and use the 'Install zip from SD card' option. The rom will automatically wipe the phone memory and cache. Once it is complete (you are back at the Recovery menu and able to move around the menu), use the 'Go Back' option at the bottom of the list, hit the power button, then scroll down to 'Reboot Phone Now' and hit the power button again.

If all went well, it will boot up into Cog.

might have found the issue, thinking it may be the audience chip config causing the dialer to do strange stuff. I think it just gets compiled with enabling it in the config, and doing what I did enables other stuff not needed on the captivate. Not sure yet tho, I will be testing the kernel thru the day and check voice quality to make sure the chip is enabled and not causing problems.
