Well I have only faced this issue after clearing app data. If you clear app data, it will say no connection, battery must be half full...that error. If you leave it there, it wont get resolved. The only way to resolve is to select the live wallpaper again.

The application downloads picture only if the battery is above 50% level? Is it possible to change the battery setting?

Also in my 5" 1080P screen, I see black bar at the top and bottom.

What does hardware acceleration do anyway? How is beneficial? Seems to work just fine on my N900A, but I don't see a difference..?

It's a lot more fluent with hardware acceleration! Thanks for that! Just when I go to 500 Firepaper over the Recent Apps it always goes to the initial screen instead of the History Browser where it was. That's a pity.
But all in all a great app!

Love, love, love it. Thanks! IMO this is better than Muzei. Muzei gets recognition because of the developer but I'm a huge fan of this. OK I know chainfire is a great developer, but Roman gets more love for some reason.

It did return to the History Browser in my dev version but I disabled that for performance reasons, still looking for a work-around on that.

Thanks, it is really good to hear this once in a while.

Muzei gets recognition because of the developer but I'm a huge fan of this. OK I know chainfire is a great developer, but Roman gets more love for some reason.

Roman is Google'r with a lot of following, especially by other devs (who learn design tricks from his posts and videos), who spread the word to their own followers.

The thing is, most of the acclaim for Muzei is for it's very shiny configuration interface - people fawn over it. How often are you going to be in that configuration interface? If it's setup well - never. I'm also pretty sure Roman took a bunch of things from 500 Firepaper as base idea ...

I've spotted dozens of bugs in Muzei (it doesn't even work at all on some high-res large screens, good job), all in all it really doesn't work that well, IMHO. The API has a number of quirks which make it really hard for a source like 500px to behave well scheduling wise or costly bandwidth wise. Yes, there is a sample plugin for it (oh surprise!) and some have built out on it - one of the things with that is that neither respect 500px's terms and conditions (or didn't last I checked) ... and the images are lower resolution than the ones 500 Firepaper fetches as well.

All in all, I'm not a big fan of Roman. As a Google'r he's responsible for design - as with his clock widget, he's releasing an app for free that completely disrupts the indie market, and the only reason he can do that is precisely because he's a Google'r. He's personally killed this entire segment of the LWP market. He gets applauded for free and open source and shiny and whatever (which helps spread the word) - well if you work at Google and get paid up to $200k for it, then it's easy to do just that.

Heck, if 500px themselves didn't see something in 500 Firepaper, I would have dropped the project altogether, as there is pretty much no way - thanks to Roman - that I'll ever get back even minimum wage on the development of it otherwise. And no, it's not all about the money, but I do have bills to pay, and I have to choose what I spend my time on, and yes revenue is a factor in that.

Roman, just one more reason as a dev to not be fond of Google (as if we were lacking reasons). This is not the first time something like this has happened either.

Mind you, most of this *****ing is not because I dislike competition - I consider this to be unfair competition. Had it been another indie dev with a rev stream somewhere (or 500px themselves), then it would have been fair game. I'd still not be jumping for joy about it, but it makes the entire situation completely different.

Sure, some would come with the argument that you need to innovate and if you make your product *that* much better than something shiny and free and OSS, you can still sell it, etc. The target market unfortunately is not really large enough for that at this time. And it's really, really hard to compete with free apps that don't care about legality either.

I actually had no idea there was any similar app. :)

This is one of the first things I do when setting up a new ROM. Thanks for the great app. And for the reminder to do the upgrade. I don't actually need the extras, but I do like to support other devs I have respect for. I doubt my $4 is going to help the bottom line much, but it's a small price to pay to support something I use so much.

I didn't mean to push any buttons! Great post! I've been following your work for a long time. This post made me buy the Pro version. I always buy the pro version if it's an app I use regularly and thought I had already bought the Pro version of this. Well, I hadn't for some reason, but did just now. Keep up the good work Chainfire.

Hmm I'm on GS4 TouchWiz in 4.4.2 KitKat and in order to see next wallpaper, I gotta tap with three fingers twice...

But overall, very good app. Have been using it for a while now.

Most wallpapers simply aren't the same size as your screen, so either the app zooms them in a little, or you get black bars. Most people prefer the zoom option, which is what the app does.

Hmm I'm on GS4 TouchWiz in 4.4.2 KitKat and in order to see next wallpaper, I gotta tap with three fingers twice...

Well, that is certainly odd!

More weird is that next time I only gotta tap (with three fingers) only once... But eventually, I gotta tap twice again.

I noticed the same since the new version(s) (2.05/2.06 for certain) on my S4 - however, it works like the notes state for HTC devices - try the 3 finger tap by placing each finger one at a time quickly.

Thanks guys. Thanks for the crash reports also. Seems live wallpapers and daydreams are handled slightly different across devices and I mostly tested on Nexus 5 and Nexus 10.

I've already fixed a couple of crashes, and some trouble with daydreams specifically on S4/Note3. Play should update in a few hours.

Keep the crash reports coming, and don't forget to mention such details as your exact device and Android version, and if possible provide a logcat.

Wow, nice work!

Battery heavy drain

Battery drain bug in the latest version, 2.06. Total battery time: 6h. HW acceleration disabled, but have tried it first and then restarted app as suggested by the app itself. Maybe it's related to reloading the cache, but 4 of 6 hours of active time is too much. All the time was on wifi. Running on Moto G Dual, XT1033, locked bootloader and stock 4.4.2.
Good luck, and great app by the way, ChainFire :)

Its quite an old bug now, nothing to do with new version, only happens randomly though so it will disappear soon.

500 Firepaper provides a live wallpaper and a daydream showing you the latest images from /r/EarthPorn throughout the day.

You never need to look at that boring old wallpaper again, or search for hours for a nice new one. This app will show you quality photographs from all over the world - different ones each day!

NOTICE: This app switched from using the 500px API to showing images from Reddit's /r/EarthPorn sub, as 500px is shutting down their API. Please read the statement on my G+ page - https://plus.google.com/+Chainfire/posts/W52tb4kp8zN

Configurable options include the refresh interval, brightness of the images, oversaturation, and blurring.

Please note that high resolution imagery and animation takes quite a bit of memory, so obviously this app is aimed at high-end devices.

If you are a Muzei user, 500 Firepaper also presents itself as an art source to Muzei.

    FAQ

What does buying Pro get me?
I've already made all the features available to you for free. Supporting my developments is optional, but certainly appreciated.

Why is there no save feature ?
    Not allowed per API terms

Three finger tap to go to the next image doesn't seem to work, what now ?
On some devices (like the HTC One) you need to put down your fingers one-by-one.

Why does this use so much RAM ?
High-resolution imagery takes a lot of memory in uncompressed form, and multiple buffers are required. But fear not, should your device need the memory while the wallpaper/daydream is not visible, the memory occupied by the app will automagically be released and repurposed.

Can the cached images be put somewhere else, like on my sd card ?
    No, they cannot.

Do you want a balloon ?
    No, but thanks for asking.

    Notices

Why ? (you can skip this if not interested)

So this really isn't anything special and probably nobody cares about it. But here it is anyway.

I actually started writing something a little bit like this years ago (which was called Firepaper) which had loads of advanced options, but due to Android 2.x and the constant fighting with memory limitations, I never released anything. Then past February I thought about doing something with 500px, and wrote a lot of the code, but for some reason never finished it. This weekend I had some time to spare and didn't feel like working on any of my usual apps, and I was annoyed with the Nexus 5 wallpaper, so I finished this up (this is something I actually want for my own phone).

There's other live wallpapers and daydreams that do similar things. But due to the nature of background syncing, caching and transferring images I didn't really feel like trusting somebody else to get that right, and not drain my battery when I need it most or rake up the data charges. Not that I'm convinced I did it right, but it works for me so far :)
