Will this work to power a usb hub for my nexus?

Ok, i have a OTG-Y cable to power my nexus 7 and a harddrive, but It seems that the hard drive gets so little power that it does not work if I have a usb extension cable or hub between it and the y-cable

So i need a powered USB hub, after much searching on ebay I can not find a 12v powered hub (car), so I should probably fix this myself.

So, what if i modify a normal usb cable like this on the picture so I can use another USB-power adapter to power the hub (and then harddrive, and other devices)

Will this work?

the hard drive has 2 usb ports right?

the second port is only for the power not for the data. so you only need a power source and dont have to fix the cable.
and for the in car installment of the power source.

Nope, the hdd only have 1 usb port.

Ok, why a powerbank, why dont just use power from my car?

Would also work.but if you have a y-cable you don't have do do anything with the cablrs
