UPDATE-10/7 : The above method gives "signature verify fail" on SPLs with S=ON... We should try to find a way to sign the package :(
Of course let's try every key we can, but don't you think the carrier would have restricted it to their signing key only?

Possibly another method that requires UID system that we could do on a terminal app?
Code:
echo 'boot-recovery' >/cache/recovery/command
echo '--update_package=SDCARD:update.zip' >> /cache/recovery/command

dumb question. Since everything on the mytouch is basically the same as the G1 (with the exception of the ROM), could we fool the NBH that was released for the G1 into thinking it's a myTouch Rom and use it to downgrade, gain root, then upgrade? I'll fully admit that it seems a little far fetched, but figured I'd ask.

no because then the nbh would fail the sig check

The Honorable Mr. Haykuro様 suggested that it should be possible to take an officially released signed-by-HTC NBH containing a hackable SPL, copy it to SD card using a card reader, and booting the phone while holding down the volume-down key. This should flash the SPL with one that allows fastboot.

so your comment made me think this... we have a hero RUU right? and burried within that are the images for the hero...could we use the RUU but replace the images with our own?

flashing directly

A noob question ... can we flash the new HERO ROM to magic by pushing it directly without using the recovery image?
