I was checking ebay and I saw that you could find batteries and travel chargers for my Desire HD at a good price. Is the smartphone damaged if you use those batteries?

Any battery can damage the phone.

Will cheap batteries be more likely to damage it?
Yes!

Who knows!

A bad battery usually just doesn't work or last only a short time.
A really bad battery can leak battery fluids into your phone or swell up during charging maybe breaking the battery cover.
