Friend passed away - unlock help

One of my best friends passed away this weekend. He as many of us was a security nut and his wife has asked me to get into his phone.
I've told her I think may be able to help.
I have physical access to the device and adb. His phone was not rooted and has a swipe pattern.
I'd appreciate and direction. I'll be google'n like a mad man but thought I'd ask here as well.
I just want to reiterate. I can call Verizon, Google and so on. This is not a stolen phone. I understand how it could be seen that way.

Sorry to hear about your friend. You can probably unlock his phone with his google account. (and his wife probably knows the answer to the security question for his google password if you need to reset that). All you have to do is try a passcode that doesn't work. Then there should be a forgot password button on the bottom. I think all you need to do from there is log in to google with his account.

As long as you can get into his Google account you should be able to do it
