if you look at all the vidoes/images you'll see that the edges of the screen/glass are tapered up. you'll see a somewhat of a bump.

I believe the reason for doing that is so when the phone is lying face down the screen isn't touching whatever surface its on.

i.e. helps prevent scratches

It also uses gorilla glass, so it should be even more resistant to scratches from the off.

I dont think this is a reason, since it has gorilla glass!

it is designed so that when your sliding from the middle to the outside of the phone, it gives feedback when you reach the edge of the device. The Nexus S has a similar design. It is also supposed to help.with ergonomics, seeing as htc seems to have put in a lot of thought into how to make a 4.3 inch screen feel comfortable to hold, hence why the screen has a 16:9 ratio compared to other comparable devices.
Devices:
Phones = Nexus One --> T-Mobile G2 --> HTC Sensation --> Samsung GS3
Tablets = Motorola Xoom --> Asus Transformer Prime --> ASUS Transformer Infinity --> Nexus 7

Currently Running:
CM10.1 RC2 (Samsung GS3)
SmoothROM (Nexus 7)

Interesting....

So basically contoured glass means that glass has concave shape ?

I would think it its for comfort since it ll natural against the curved face. It can be very comfortable holding somehow flat that treats a purses point against a curved surface ie the face

Brilliant 4” Contour Display
Nexus S is manufactured by Samsung, and it is the first smartphone to launch with a Contour Display. The curved glass screen fits comfortably in the palm of your hand and along the side of your face.
That's that the Nexus S page has to say about the Contour Display
