So far I am sure that charge_only_mode is what displays the big battery screen when you plug in the phone while the phone's off.

could we possibly insert a recovery with script to boot the recovery when plugged in
what does the current recovery apk do to boot it

Ha! I'm in luck!

Just to demonstrate the work, I re-used portions of the hack by Dexter_nlb to load Tenfar's CWM based recovery.

remount the /system read write (terminal emulator or adb or whatever), copy the original one to /system/bin/charge_only_mode.bin replace /system/bin/charge_only_mode with the one in the package(which is a shell script). Create an empty file named 'recovery_mode' in the root directory of the sdcard if you want to boot into the recovery.

Power off the phone and then plug in the AC adapter( NOT the usb on your PC, or it will boot the android os). The recovery should show up.

So far I don't think the mod is worth much, but I guess it would be handy when android refused to boot and we can't get into the recovery using Tenfar's bootstrap app.

does your script work cuz if it does i would add it to my rom as emergency recovery
you would receive sum credit for the script

it would be cool to be able to say
if you can charge it you can fix it

tested and works on my phone at least. install the bootstrap recovery first and then apply this mod. BTW, I don't think the original recovery hack mounts the /system read-write, but I'm pretty sure this one does.

well i'll add it to the rom and include the bootstrap recovery
as an emergency recovery access feature then
also it should work for other devices in theory as long as recovery is in the same place

As far as I can see:
Current issues:
1. mount/unmount is still a problem
2. when you hit reboot in the recovery while AC power plugged, it reboots you into recovery again.

Don't see the power down option anywhere.

The system is around 175MB, according to the boot command line passed to the kernel it is 182656k, a bit more than 178MB. However, I wonder what took up so much space, since most of my android builds are around 100MB or so.
