Cool Make all android phones the same

I wish Google would tell manufactures to make all the phones ports similar, so that we wouldn't have to buy different products every time we get a new phone. I think that's why I think the iphone is so popular and people stay with it. Just put all the usb ports on the same side for docks and what not.

Not a bad discussion question. I feel that diversity is the selling point of Android vs. Iphone though. Manufacturers tend to try and get you to buy their devices by putting their own custom overlay over the android system (touchwiz, motoblur, sense). They also release phones that do have pure android on it for people that do prefer the Android experience. As for keeping ports in the same spots.. I can definitely agree with that. Seems strange to put ports all in different spots, but devices are all different sizes anyway and wouldn't really work in all docks.

Since the greatest strength in Android phones is their diversity I'm going to have to disagree with you. Some people (myself included) have their phone plugged in to the stereo in the car and a car charger while driving, having both ports on the same side is super convenient, some people like landscape docks, having the plug on the side is essential for that, finally some people want their phone in portrait on the dock, again the usb port must be on the bottom for that.

In the end it comes down to choice which is ultimately Android's greatest strength.

I think the actual discussion would be to take a cue from the PC manufacturers. Most computers run Windows with many different manufacturers, but the UI does not diverge much from each other. You can be on a Dell and jump onto an HP and they pretty much look the same as far as the OS goes. Android on the other hand has Sense, Touchwiz, Motoblur, etc. and I think that's where the problem comes in.

I believe that almost all if not most phones have fallen to micro usb under some sort of agreement that I don't belive involves google. So, that's already becoming. Reality. Unless I misread.

Edit: and I did, google will never have control on the arrangement of a usb port.

I think those options are great ..... what would REALLY be nice is for ALL Android phones to be able to upgrade to latest version WITHOUT having to wait so darn long !
help with ROMs & Themes is only a click away = qbking77 "how-to videos"

That's the downside of diversity, with so many different hardware elements it would be downright impossible for that to ever happen. At best and with all of their resources poured into it no company is going to take less than 3 months to prepare a an update for a phone and since every OEM has 3+ Android phones at a time it takes even longer.

I believe the EU requires micoUSB ports on all phones for some reason.
There is more info about it in the anandtech Veer article: http://www.anandtech.com/show/4424/h...ited-for-pre-3

I'm personally fine with having the ports in different places. I just wish all phones had those copper contacts like the OG Nexus and launched with official car & home docks. Waiting 6+ months for official docks is stupid because by then we are already researching what phone to buy next.

I think the outside look of a phone doesn't really matter to me much. But the way Android is built for said device does. If Samsung built their versions of Android closer to how Google builds stock Android things like cm7 would be much easier to port without having to butcher the code to get it working.

A law was passed a few years back that forced all cell phones beyond a certain date to have chargers fully compatible with each other. The decided port format became micro usb. The aim was to reduce the number of charger cords that ended up in landfills, though that theory was highly flawed. I do believe it was a US law and not EU, but I could be wrong.
