I noticed that there is a little bit more RAM available:
On Froyo KC1: max 304 MB
On Gingerbread KG3: max 329MB

Not much more but better than less RAM available!

newbie question ..how did you figure this ? from the running services setting?.. my used plus free = 273 MB only...

That's a good tip, as 7zip hasn't worked for me. But I just use Heimdall instead of Odin, can handle zImage's no problem.
