New tv's that support mhl devices do not require the external power source for the adapter to function. Eventually all hdtv's will have this feature so you can mirror and charge at the same time. At least that was my understanding when the mhl standard was introduced.

That's what I was thinking. I am going to buy the mhl adapter for Sensation from Amazon and see if it works. I am running stock unrooted. Does anyone know if a standard hdmi cable plugs into the mhl adapter?

Here is the one I ordered. Hopefully it works http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005E5MPBS/ref=ox_ya_os_product

Ok guys:confused:. I got the HTC MHL adapter today. Everything plugs in fine. The phone into the adapter, the power source into the adapter and the hdmi to the tv. The power source is working as indicated by charging light. The tv will flicker when I plug the device in and then it will recognize a signal then it will drop signal entirely. It never gets past a black flicker on the screen. I am thinking that HTC will need to enable some software with a future OTA update. I do not think it's a hardware thing as I do get a flicker like it's trying to connect. I just think that the mirroring software isn't there. If anyone has an apk for the HTC Sensation mirriroing utility please post it or pm me. Also the Sensation MHL adapter/cable could transmit at the wrong freq for the Inc2 too, not sure.

Sorry guys. I am going to contact HTC again, but she did tell me that the Sensation cable may not work and they were working on one for the Inc2. Also I remember that a software update was needed to enable wireless charging for the Inc2. So maybe the same is true for the MHL.

Let us know what happens after your next contact.

This is what Charles at HTC had to say about the Sensation cable not working for me

"Thank you for contacting us at HTC Technical support Steve. I'm sorry to hear that you're unable to use the MHL mirroring capabilities of the Incredible 2.

Is there some sort of software utility I need to get this to work on the Inc2? Unfortunately there isn't any software available to allow MHL mirroring for your device. However you may try 3rd party solutions from the Android Market Place. Unfortunately we are not able to assist with locating and using 3rd party programs and software.

Are you going to release updated software for the Inc2 to allow MHL mirroring to work? At the present time we do not any information regarding a software update or maintenance to MHL mirroring capabilities on the Incredible 2.

Please keep watch on our website at: www.htc.com/us for future information that may be posted. We thank you for your patience while we find the solution that works for you. As always, we are here to answer any technical questions or concerns you may have between 6am to 1am EDST, 7 days a week for your convenience, or by phone at 1-866-449-8358."

So at this point I am not sure why it isn't working. HTC still says it has MHL capabalities, but they are not sure how it works bascially (how can they not know, they manufactured the device:mad:). Hopefully they will produce a cable specific to the Inc2 or release some software to enable it.

It tried the Sensation cable with a Sony and a Samsung HD TV in multiple hdmi ports with multiple hdmi cables. I read that people were even having trouble with the Sensation connecting to a TV. So if anyone owns a Sensation or Evo 3d please let me know if there is some setting I am missing.

Chances are it's going to require a driver that is not enabled or present. If this is the case, no amount of apps from the market will make it work.

Yea It seems that HTC hasn't put any software development into mhl on the Inc2. Hopefully they do soon. It is probably not a priority for them at the moment though. According to some sources on the web, the adapter should be universal, the software just isnt there yet.

Does anyone have the mhl driver/utility from the HTC Sensation in apk format that I can try?

What kind of hardware is on the Sensation? I think I'll go research this later. If it's similar/same, it might be possible to bring over the software to the Inc2.

I am not sure but the htc mhl adapter fits into the micro usb of the sensation, evo 3d and Inc2. The oem Inc2 ac charger plug into the adapter carrying a charge over to the inc2...so I know it is make a connection. The hdmi plugs from the adapter to tv and start searching for a signal, then it cuts out.

So the MHL hardware should be the same between all three devices. I think they are using different software though, Sense 3.0 is on Sensation. I am on stock unrooted Sense 2.1 GB on the Inc2.

The Sensations does have a dual core qualcom, but the same amount of ram as the Inc2.

It's a microUSB port. This is a standardized port configuration. Any microUSB cable, and those designed to fit the port, will fit. My kindle has a microUSB port and the MHL cable would plug into it. It has no MHL hardware though ;)

What I was referring to was the internal hardware. I'm sure the MHL hardware would be part of the SOC, or perhaps an ancillary chip on the board. If it's not part of the SOC, that could make it more difficult to figure out the hardware, if it matches, etc.

Thank you for looking into it. I thought maybe it was a dual core s3 vs a single core s2 problem, but htc says the Flyer has mhl capabilities too, and it is only a single core device http://www.htc.com/us/products/tablets/flyer-bestbuy#tech-specs

Maybe it has something to do with Sense 3.0 opposed to Sense 2.1, idk?

We need to start a blitz campaign at HTC via technical support emails, and Facebook. They respond quickly to facebook because they basically publically outed there for any hardware/software flaws, so they respond to maintain a positive public image.

I talked to HTC again. They sadly don't seem like they care. They recommended that I use the tv out cable for the Inc1. I told them it doesn't work. Half of them are clueless at support.

When I get some time I'm going to try looking at hardware and libraries. I don't have a MHL cable still, though. I'll have to see if I can find one locally, else it may be some time before I can test as I'm taking a trip soon.

I went ahead and looked at the kernel source HTC posted, and compared it to the source for the EVO3D and Sensation (both of which have working MHL output), and sadly the Inc2 does not have the same capability in its kernel. On the E3D/Sensation, MHL output is handled by the Silicon Image SiI9234 MHL transmitter. That driver isn't present in the Inc2 kernel. What I still don't know is whether the hardware is present on the Inc2. If so, then there's some hope of eventually getting it working. If not, then we are SOL

Ok. Maybe it isn't automatic. When your in stock and playing a video try having the Mhl cable plugged in and while playing a video in the stock gallery press menu and try and see if you can select Mhl.

Knowing the chip may help. I've pretty much already voided my warranty so I may take my device apart and look at chips.

Been pretty busy else I'd put a bit more time into this :S

    TV out replaced by DLNA

I had the dinc (1) and I loved that phone. It was the best phone I had ever had until I got my dinc 2. I was a little aggravated when I found out that the dinc 2 had no tv out feature. Even though the tv out on my dinc was not perfect it was functional, and I thought as big of a step up as the dinc 2 is it would have been made better, maybe a little hd out love like the rezound and razr. I just got my dinc 2 on 11/28 and I did not know that there was no tv out until the cable would not fit from my dinc 1 tv out and I did enough research to find the answers.
What I found is that the dinc 2 does not have wired tv out b/c wires will be a thing of the past in the near future. DLNA will replace all of the wired streaming we are still using now so you could say that the dinc 2 is a little ahead of its time, and I think in the future that is how the dinc2 will be looked at.

Here is a rundown of the DLNA capabilities of the dinc2
Ok basically there is no mirroring capability on the dinc2. The good news is that you really do not need it. With DLNA the internet is available through your or any wifi network that you have access to. All you need is a DLNA media player hooked to any tv via avi (standard rca cables) or hdmi. I have the wd tv live player hooked to my tv and my home wifi. That gives me access to netflix, youtube, pandora, tuninradio, and about 20 other of those type web based outlets. The great thing for dinc2 owners is that the dinc2 will interact with the wdtv live player right out of the box, no third party apps needed. You can stream your music files, videos, and pictures from your phone to your tv wirelessly. Simply go to whichever media you want to stream >menu>select player>wd tv (or whatever DLNA media player you have in your network) then you should be up and running(may take 15 seconds to load onto the tv). Do not bother with the apps that are available from the app store for streaming, they are all glitch bags and will not work properly, the dinc2 has all the software it needs built in to interact with any DLNA media player. More and more the external box will become a thing of the past b/c of smart tvs with DLNA built right in. Be glad you own one, it will serve you well in the near future.;)
The dinc2 is a great phone. I tested it against the 4g droid charge today and it blew it away in everything except the 4g speed vs 3g speed, but this dinc2 is snappy and is not far behind the charge even with a 3g connection. I got my dinc2 in red for free on black friday on vz's website and it is a great phone. I say thanks to 4g and dual core processors hitting the android market for making the best single core 3g android phone available for free. Do the tests on this phone and you will see that it is a fine piece of hardware. I am getting QS scores of over 1500. The 4g samsung charge I tested today got a 952 and the dinc 1 got a 980. I think it is a really good phone with the perfect size beautiful lcd display, srs wow and gen 2 snapdragon processor for a fast interface, the DLNA compatibility only makes it better.
