unfortunately, that's the default behaviour of the ICS Launcher2. I also went with Nova Launcher, which here on XDA somewhere..

If I understand right, the only way to get into recovery is to pull the battery?

Or do this:

Power button -> reboot -> wait for screen to turn off -> keep holding volume down...
