Being an electrical engineer that has designed gyroscopes and compasses into many systems including dead reckoning systems and inertial measurement units, to me it sounds like a software issue especially if it works better when you disable auto rotate (the two shouldn't be related in the slightest but I guess bad programming can break many things, lol). Now if you noticed a huge improvement when you disabled wifi/bluetooth/3g/4g/lte or plugged/unplugged it from a charger then it would scream EMI hardware design issues.

In airplane mode, when everything is off, google skymap works ok, sluggish, not very accurate, but at least it moves!

LOL! Videos people, Vi-De-O!! So we all can see what you guys mean, and then we can bring it up to LG or other news sites. I know LG responded to the thread on their forum regarding our compass, but still pending a proper respond, so the more proof we have, the more we can make our case.

Motorola Atrix 4G > Unlocked BL!! > GingerBlur 2.3.4 > Navalynt's Mod (v1.4) > Tenfar's CWM Recovery Mod > CM7

LG NITRO HD P930 >> Root via SuperOneClick v2.3.2 >> Bytecode64's CWM v.5.** >> KernelPan!c's v0.3

I turned off the auto-rotate, but the compass app I'm using is still all over the place.

I wish I could make better sense of the info provided in 'Sensor Test', it gives the raw readings of all your different sensors. With the Skymap and Compass and such apps there's too many variables at play (screen rez, software glitches, gui glitches, etc...)

Just a quick check here, for all the folks that have checked your magnetic-field sensor (aka compass):
1. Did you find your compass to not be working properly?
2. Is your phone rooted?
3. Did you debloat or otherwise manually remove "bloat" software?

For me:
1. Yes.
2. Yes.
3. Yes.

Just wondering if maybe one of those "bloat" pieces of software might've been doing something to compensate so the compass works correctly.

1.) No
2.) Yes
3.) Sorta

My compass seems unstable with auto rotate enabled, in particular when trying to use sky map, but with it disabled, it's quite steady. I don't know what kind of testing I should be doing, but standing at work and just rotating in place, it's quite accurate about telling me which direction I'm facing. I removed a few programs from my phone, but I'm very cautious about that stuff. I only removed things I absolutely knew for sure what they were, and that they were not system apps, like the poker game and yellow pages, etc. Really obvious programs only.

If there's a banjo in your hand while you're offering that...I'll pass!

For you viewing pleasure, here's a video of the compass on my Nitro. The orange bottlecap in the vid represents where North is...Notice how the compass points pretty much everywhere, except north.
