MHL adapter works fine, but it occupies the only USB port available on the Note. So how would one connect any other USB devices to this possible "Linux box"?

Yeah, this is the biggest problem I see also. On a laptop where you have 3 usb ports, vga/hdmi out it sometimes still isn't enough. Having only one port is a huge limitation. You can bluetooth your keyboard and mouse, but the limitation of no usb sticks/hdds is baaad
