Because it's a boot animation. There are way bigger fish to fry. And as you've seen right here, someone in the community has taken care of it.

can anyone tell me why I would only be seeing a black screen during bootup after installing this or any boot screen mod? I can't figure out what is wrong. My device boots up still, just no animation.

This fixed mine
Delete the file
/data/property/persist.sys.nobootanimation
