suggest being patient. i rooted my phone with superoneclick a few days ago.

it looks like it is locking up but it pulls through eventually. it took a total of 3 whole minutes to root.

I did wait quite awhile. It paused on step 5, too, but eventually restarted. on step 7, it sat for a long time. I'll try again, and let it sit for an hour or so. . .

2049: it just reached step 7. I'll go watch TV for awhile.

2157 SOC still not responding - freezes during step 7. I'm giving up trying to root for tonight.

did you click "root" or "shell root"?

i just use root. hmm. you should just odin flash a kk4 kernel.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1294477
done cwm and root built in
Odin3v1.85.zip

boot phone into download mode, run odin, click PDA, load kernel tar, click start. done.

I was using "root." I did a factory reset, and tried again, but it still froze, so I flashed what you said (above), and am running SuperOneClick now. (It's currently paused in step 7, but "not responding" is absent, so I'm hoping for successful root.)

2042: "not responding" during step 7.

I'll keep working on it.

huh... well next method.

Odin3v1.85.zip
unzip to pc. run odin then boot phone into download mode (connected to PC)
click the PDA box in odin and select a .tar or .tar.md5 file to flash a kernel (or whole rom)

you have 2.3.5 kk4 build stock
you need a kk4 kernel that will root your phone.. and give you built in cwm. (dont need rom manager, just boot to recovery and will be in cwm right away)
here is Corn kernel, everything you need to get started. read, find the latest version in an " Odin tar package " and do what i said above.
