R u S-OFF ?? If so , then do not bother about official ICS update. just download the ICS ROM of your choice from xda and flash it. Even if you want the particular OTA from your career , that is also possible to flash being S-OFF. Download the ota and choose "install later"
It will save the zip on sdcard. Rename the zip to "update.zip". Boot into recovery (you should have custom recovery) and choose "install from sdcard" , select the "update.zip" and flash it.

If you are S-ON and rooted , then follow trkaaa's thread. !!
I think I am S-Off and i know I am deffinitly rooted, is there a way to check this?? thanks!

Question that I didn't see, unless I looked over it.

Why do we need firmwares and such for this device before flashing roms like ICS? I came from the mytouch, where do you didn't need to do this.
HTC Sensation...currently running stock rom

Firmwares allow you to update your radio and ensure your hardware is able to match the desired settings to run ICS

Yes. Firmware is needed.

The phone won't work without firmware at all.

ya supercid allows you to match any firmware. otherwise you will have to "get var" your phone and find the approriate firmware that goes with your cid. having supercid is quite beneficial. it makes it universal.

my completely stock (with a few extra apps) sensation 4g runs the quadrant benchmark and only gets around 1655 to 1855 and runs it super slow compared to the speed of the tests in online videos.

linpack single thread test: mflops=~43, time=~2secs, norm res=5.68
linpack multi thread test: mflops=~72.7, time=~2.32, norm res=3.24

these scores and time it takes to complete the tests seems long...is there something wrong with hardware/software?
