Like others above - I've managed to find an old inactive SIM. (Mine is from Australia) and put it in my phone. In that situation Wireless now functions!

So you can have a phone which works as a phone but missing smart phone features, or a phone which has wifi but not work as a phone.....

I've let HTC know.
