Anyway, next year Samsung is going to announce galaxy tab 7.7, which has a super AMOLED Plus screen.

Basically, if at the normal viewing distance, you cannot discern any technology artifacts (that is, they are smaller than your retina's resolving capability), then it is irrelevant what technology is actually used to make the display.

Other than that consideration, the arguments about which display technology is an academic argument which has no place in the buying criteria for a device.

In other words, if you cannot tell the difference just by looking at it at normal viewing distance, you are just a wanker trying to get people upset for no good reason than being a pompous asshole.

From what I have read, pentile displays worse at low resolutions, but at 'retina' resolutions, it is irrelevant.

I could only notice differences between the Note and a 4s when held up close with my best glasses or a magifying glass, but not at normal operating distances.

Nuff said!

I'll probably trade in this Note if the next one has a non-pentile screen.

Call me an outlier if you wish, but I can absolutely tell that this is a pentile screen. I noticed as soon as I first turned the screen on.

I love my Note but I have no disillusions about the screen. It could absolutely be better.

And no, I don't have to view it super close to tell. Between 12-18" is close enough. There's just something.. off about the screen. Especially evident with text.

It's just not very sharp, at all!

Basically its like the age old argument, vinyl is better than cd! But the fact is hardly anyone can tell the difference. I love the screen on my note, not really bothered if it has to share sub pixels

DONATE TO ME
As a regular reference text PDF ereader I can practically say that certain document texts are illegible or fuzzy at the same zoom level on a note vs an SLCD screen of my iphone 4 or HTC Sensation.

I'm the biggest pentile hater in the world, but you can fit 2 full iphone screens inside the borders of one Note screen. So zoom out a tad.

When I used my Nexus One, I noticed the pentile layout every time I looked at the screen. With my Note, I don't notice any subpixel artifacts at all unless I bring it close and look for them. Note >> iphone (but I still want RGB subpixel layout on Note2!)

If the SGS3 OLED rings true, the next 720p screen will utilize a type of in-between rgb/pentile. There will still be an extra green subpixel. It will be sharper than pentile but still not as sharp as LCD.

Ho hum.

More info on this:

According to OLED Association, Samsung’s new manufacturing process for AMOLED displays will incorporate a phosphorescent green subpixel to every pixel, reducing overall power consumption by lessening the brightness necessary for certain tasks. As the human eye is most sensitive to green light, it appears more prominent than other colours, allowing displays to “trick” the retina into thinking there is more light than there is. Apparently the new OLED display will be more “competitive with the [iPhone's] retina display at white levels of 40%, while significantly outperforming LCDs for images and video.” This extra subpixel is going to accompany a full RGB palette, qualifying it for the “Plus” moniker.

Impressively, the rumored specs for the SGS3 give a 4.6" screen at 319ppi, which is just a hair under the iPhone's 326ppi but at a full inch+ diagonally.

Presumably we can expect the Note 2 to have this same type of screen-subpixel arrangement (but larger of course).

While impressive, and while I can detect the pentile matrix of my Note's screen, this news doesn't struck me as a "must" upgrade. I probably, definitely would for a full RGB arrangement, though.

Samsung's next Exynos iteration is also expected to simply be a quadcore upgrade of their existing A9 instruction set basis. Performance will still pale in comparison to chipsets utilizing A15 instruction set.

Of course, these are all still rumors so far.

Still, it does seem like I may just wait the year and a half for the Note 3. =)

Oh la la... pentile screens...

What can I say? Bad implemented pentile tech, it's the worst thing that can happen to a phone.

As an user of the droid 3, the screen ruins all the fun. Some colours as green, arent represented as it should. And you can see pixels everywhere. A solid colours looks like it's just a bunch of giant pixels trying to compose it.

On the note, pentile is implemented pretty well. Some colours could have the kind of weird pixels around it. But text is sharp and solid colours looks pretty decent.
The only real noticeable problem, is the dark grey rendering mess. Not sure if it can be tuned or improved.

Both screen are years lights of distance. And both are pentile.

As much as I love the GNotes screen I hate reading text. The white background has a slight cream/yellow hue, but that's the only thing I don't like about that. I came from an atrix but surprisingly never had that problem

how could it be better? you cant get 1280 x 800 super amoled plus screens yet, how could they put in a screen they haven't made yet. Instead they put in the best screen they had at the time, its like saying the processor in the note is **** they should have put a 5ghz quad core one in it.
I would sooner have a 1280 x 800 res screen than a super amoled plus screen at 800 x 480 like the s2. Bet if you stretched the s2 resolution to 5.3 inches it would look shockingly bad, and you like many others would have probably starting spouting they should have used a pentile screen to up the resolution to make it a nice screen!!
