Pretty much to compile recovery, the easiest way is to have a working CM9 tree.
Beyond that I can't help, as I stick with unmodified straight CWM to avoid the chances of weirdo bugs.

Do they release the recovery source to the public? If so where can I find it?

You want to do too much at one time, I am usually like that.
Either pick Kernel or Rom development.
Doing both for the first time is just going to blow up in your face and get you no where.
It's part of the CM9 source tree - but compiling the CWM source code without a full AOSP/CM source tree is a major pain.

Yea I tend to get ahead of myself.. I get so interested and try doing everything at once lol. Kernel development sounds fun. I got an idea of how yo edit roms. Is there any tuts for making a kernel?

1Personally I started by modding a rom to my liking then started creating my own.
Task's deodexed AT&T leak is a good place to start.
Download it, extract it to your PC with 7zip then mess with the files and zip it back up.
If you want to start from scratch there is a ton of guides, just search for it.
Basically you download the firmware (.img file) extract it, deodex it, zip it up and see if it works then try modding it.
