ERROR: adb could not be granted root access via local.prop method

Anyone know what that means?

Just confirming that the alternative method posted on the first post of this thread indeed works perfectly well with my ME860 running 2.3.4.

I am now finally rooted

That's right you will still be able to OTA safely as long as you dont unlock BL, you might lose root after update though.
