Indeed, I'd love to be able to run CM9 on my SGS2 with an old GB/2.x kernel. The 3.etc kernels are very much so in their infancy.

That is actually quite unlikely and could end up being impossible, since eventually the Android OS is going to require 3.x kernel features, but more likely Sony will simply implement the newer kernel once it is ready for it.

The more important question is so what? The 2.x kernel is a highly effective, efficient kernel with all the features even your average power user is likely to need, and the 3.x line is still a bit rough around the edges, thanks to its infancy.
