I'm going to be obtaining an old Hero from a family member, mainly just to experiment with rooting. It will be the first device I will be using ever that will be rooted. So I'm wondering how I should root, what root apps to download, and what the best rom is.

The easiest method would be to use the Root mod in the Development section.

Best ROM? I love Cyanogenmod, so check out the nightly.

Welcome aboard!

Thanks! Where would be the best place to go to download the Cyanogenmod nightly?

There's a thread in the dev section that has all the links for it. Let's see here..................

The thread started by Robbie has the nightly link. In fact, it has all of the links to Cyanogenmod goodness.

*cough*cough*
Sorry for stirring up the dust in this thread!
My daughter is getting a Hero for her Sprint number and I have offered to help her root and ROM it.
I have some experience with a G1, Droid 1, and Incredible 2. I have mostly used CyanogenMod on my phones and always overclocked and set up swap for better performance.
I'm looking around in this section for more information about doing this stuff on the Hero.

Is there a favorite kernel that people like?
What overclock / undervolting / swap strategies do people use?

Thanks in advance!

Holy crap, we got the phone and what a bear it's been trying to root and flash a recovery image.
Got root with z4, but recovery is kicking my butt.
ROM Manager would be my first choice, but it doesn't seem to be available for the Hero anymore.
Manually flash via adb gets shut down with "flash_image not found"
Frack!
Seems like some people have found old versions of ROM Manager somewhere on the Internet and then flash recovery ok.
Looking...

Result :
CM7.2 nightly 9-9 running pretty solid. I oc'd to just under 800MHz (max) with Incredicontrol and cleaned off a couple of system apps with TiBU.
It will run Angry Birds, but not very smoothly. Better than the stock ROM, anyway.

I see otterbox cases for it on Amazon for $10. Probably get one of those to keep the phone from suffering the fate of the last one.
We'll see how the daughter does with it.

Sorry for missing your initial posts. As far as the otterbox goes, I have a defender and it's kept the phone alive for the past 3 years, so I think it's a good investment. It basically doubles the thickness of the phone but to me it's not horrible.

Hi! I was beginning to think I'd found the Siberia of the Internet. LOL
Thanks for your response!

Daughter is complaining about the phone being slow, but she likes to complain so I'm not peeved.

Any suggestions for speeding the phone up or bulletproofing would be appreciated greatly.

Speaking of bulletproofing, anyone ever ran the v6 supercharger scripts?
There's also mention around here of something called firerat. I'll have to figure that out.
