just an FYI.. the script will still connect and download the newest version of unrevoked (3.32 today).

if you download the older version and have it in your downloads folder, the script will still unzip it and use it. the newer one that's downloaded has a '1' appended on the filename, so the script ignores it..

if you've tried before, it might be a good idea to delete all of the "reflash.tar.gz" files just so you start with a clean slate.

so to summarize:
1. in ubunto, go to home, then downloads and delete any files named "reflash.tar.gz"
2. click the firefox icon and download the 3.21 version at the link above. (make sure it goes to your downloads folder)
3. run the script as in the instructions. it will still download the newest version of unrevoked, but it will ignore it later
4. root away, friends. root away..
Just an FYI. The current version of unrevoked 3.32 is now fixed and will root the Aria, so there is no need to download 3.21 using these instructions.

I rooted using this last night. Thanks for all the work guys, worked perfectly.

One thing that I did notice that confused me as a noob is that nothing spectacular happens after you "root". The phone looks just the same, works just the same, doesn't grant you three wishes or turn into an airplane and fly you to an island... It just lets other programs work and lets you monkey with the phone in ways you weren't allowed to before.

I tried installing the WiFi app and it didn't install, still had to side load and but the rooting is what allows it to work. So once you have it installed, it works. That's what rooting does. Remember, I'm a noob, so I know it does other stuff that I don't know about yet but that's the gist of it.

Hello there,

I know this is a noob question, but I hope someone can help me.

I run Ubuntu as my standard operating system, but I am not familiar with adb.

My Aria is rooted and I am trying to flash to the latest version of liberty. In the past I have used my wife's windows box to get the updates on the internal sd. The freakin windows box is fighting me hard, I spent two hours today trying to get it to see the phone's root directory with no success (I hate windows).

I can boot to the live CD no problem and adb seems to be working just fine. I can get the update I want to the home directory and I know I should be able to use 'adb push' to get it into the Aria.

Problem is, I just don't know the proper syntax.

Can someone please help me out here?

BTW, thanks so much for the live CD image. Your work here is just awesome!
Home - Ubuntu 11.10, Killed Aria by dropping it. Seem to have bricked my Xperia mini pro u20i, Wife's phone, Samsung Captivate, Paragon rc5 and counting... (she trusts me) lol

This was very helpful, thank you. Very well written and easy to follow. It didn't actually work because I had android 2.2.2 installed, so I used zedbra's (GUIDE) How To S-Off and ROOT Aria 2.2.2. Then I used sdk tools to get rid of the AT&T bloatware, and ckuke4's instructions to edit the settings database to install 3rd party apps. Then I checked if my phone had the htc loggers file, which it did not. So I'm golden! This was a fun intro to android coding and I haven't looked at linux in a while. Thanks again!

I found these to be helpful as far as syntax. I've just used windows for this, but I noticed that the linux syntax is slightly different:

Hope that helps.

As the new Ubuntu LTS is released now, could it be possible to update the live CD? Or could someone direct me to create a new live CD? It would also be great to add the revolutionary method for rooting the phone. Maybe I could help with this because I already have some experience using Linux.

EDIT: And please update the links so I can take a look on your live CD. Maybe it is already all I need to create a new one.

EDIT 2: I see now that Unrevoked 3.32 fixed rooting the Aria, but it doesn't give you S-Off; therefore you have to use revolutionary.

For revolutionary, you will still have to generate a beta key on the revolutionary site, so the script in the live cd should redirect you there when trying to S-Off. Just as an idea.
