You need to have the patched bootloader installed to flash a rom with the patched bootloader... I think this would actually increase a noobs chances of bricking their beloved acer as most noobs I know run headlong into trouble before fully reading the instructions... There is the rare few who actually do things right but then they wouldn't need the noob rom...

Unfortunately what would've been a brilliant idea for those of us just starting out and a bit gung-ho, isn't practical.... Bit of a shame but then that's life. You're still stuck having to install patched bootloader and installer v4 BEFORE flashing this rom... as stated here -

Thanks!

I'll try to put together something a bit more friendlier when I get a chance. We got some good guides already. But NVFlashing can indeed be a bit scary. A lot of this stuff most folks have never dealt with before. But it has to be done. So lets wait a few days. (Maybe Acer will be nice and drop a new build for us also)

I like your thinking. You really try to see it from the beginners point of view. If we make it easier then more people will follow. You know how many threads where I asked if they could make it easier and ppl replied with why do we want to make it easier...blah blah

Flashing the Samsung Infuse looks like a pain in the rear. There thread takes forever with half of the stuff broken or does not work on non ATT models. I showed them how to do it in 2 steps. Yes, 2 simple steps but still they leave the long convoluted way posted in the sticky.

You are inclusive which seems to be kinda rare around here.

Well, thanks. I still must defend many folks who create guides. It's really a lot of stuff to squeeze into simple steps. Also we must consider country people are from as well. Sometimes things are lost in translation .These guys are a wealth of information and without them, we wouldn't be where we are today.

And I am positive, those guides saved a lot of bricked tabs :) :) :)

If I remember correctly, Samsung =Odin

Is it possible for you to build in an unlock feature for SIM unlock.
The ICS ROM from Team Hacksung for the i9000/Vibrant/Captivate come this way. They don't mention it but I pop in different SIM cards and they work.

So it was just a thought if there is something that can be done.
HTC overwrites the Data info when you put the phone in Diagnostic mode.
Someone found that info to wipe that area that contains the carriers info so they wipe it back to stock therefore it's unlocked. If you search XDA HTC Sensation Unlock it will show up first.

Yes, Samsung is ODIN but it WORKS. I have flashed over 100 phones and tablets and never an issue with it. It seems straight forward to use.
Hell, you place the CWM rom on your phone sd then use ODIN to flash a new kernel with CWM and done. Reboot it may convert to EXT4 then you pick the ROM from CWM and done, 2 steps but some ppl have 10 steps for what I learned can be done in 2

I'm not exactly sure where Acer keeps the carrier info for ATT and Rogers. My guess would be a separate chip on the mainboard, and not on internal memory.

I also remember, there is an ATT Rom, that used to be on Vach's site, that was shown as (used to sim-unlock). Not sure exactly what that was all about, but I believe the rom is no longer there.

Default bootloader v4 bug?

hello, MD.
i already install alexandra 3d with V3 bootloader and wakelock. everything when fine and smooth. and when i see there's bootloader v4, i flash it in to my A501. since then, sometime my A501 can not go online (no internet connection), altough the GSM signal is full. i check the Data setting, it's set ON. so, i'm curious is this because the v4 bootloader?

Shouldn't be. I use the version 4 and have no issues. Are you sure you flashed the correct version for the 501? there are for the 500 and 501, although I am not sure if there's a difference, but possibly.

If not, I attached the one I use to this post. It's in a .bin format, and I usually toss it in the same folder with the blackthund3r exe application.

@MD: Is there any difference with performance between BL V3 and V4?

Not that I am aware of. I still get 3000 in quad with either bootloader. I believe the only difference was ability to change boot display images.

Do you see some difference? As I haven't noticed any.
