I got this error and after unplugging, my phone was bricked. Unknownforce's downgrade live CD brought my phone back to life though.
Help, help! Got almost the same problem that @enarez, but I was only able to get this far:

C:\fastboot>fastboot oem writesecureflag 3
...
OKAY [ 0.104s]
finished. total time: 0.112s

Right after this my computer started looking for the HTCevo 3d drivers (they were installed before), shows very dim red light and does not turn on, phone was kept connected to usb during all of this.
Is it bricked? Would Unknowforce's downgrade CD or Linux based approach get me out of this or truly brick me if I'm not already (since it might still be s-off)?
Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided to this noob.

There's a reason I removed those steps. But yes. Run the downgrade CD live and once it finishes is you will be able go boot up into boot loader and it will show that your hboot 1.40 s-on. From there you can run the 2.17 ruu

I know, I was following other instructions to change it from s-off to s-on so that I could follow this steps to return it to hboot 1.5
I hadn't tried the downgrade CD live since there is a warning not to use it if coming from s-off which is what I had before I got the soft-brick, so I thought I asked for some advise, but it seems like I should be good, wish me luck!

A million thanks iTzLoLtrain!!!!!!

Hey this would then be another method brick the device to revert back to 1.4 right? If you do the fastboot oem writesecureflag 3 and get bricked that is.

Sorry, let me rephrase that. I am currently on 1.5hboot with S-off unlocked. Can I use this method to revert back to 1.4?

I'm getting this

Code:
C:\rootevo3dnew>fastboot oem lock
...
(bootloader) [ERR] Command error !!!
OKAY [ 0.007s]
finished. total time: 0.008s
I am 1.4 / S-OFF right now and I have read the rest of the thread and see that there is a command to go to S-ON that you removed from the op. I have also done some reading and found that people are bricking their phones by using that command.

What is the best way to get my phone to S-ON so I can flash the RUU?

I currently have an ICS rom on my phone and I am downloading a GB rom to flash it and see if that helps.
