[Q] does anyone knows why proximity sensor works during face unlock

I'm using face unlock..by chance while unlocking my phone on a dark place i noticed that proximity sensor works and emitting it's red light but after camera failed to notice my face gives me the numpad and proximity is off...... So does anyone know the purpose for using proximity sensor in face unlocking
