Default You can get an adapter...

You can get an adapter here, to use other types of headphones with the Xperia X10 without having to press the mic button...

Yes, you're spot on.
It has all to do with which rings on the connecter get which signal. Sony has used an other configuration than most brands (including apple). This is also the cause of the constant wsssshhhh sound you hear on low volume or with sound turned on. Really spoils the quality when listening on low volumes

If you have 3 or 4 pins Audio Jack to use with your phone..just use 3-2 pins or 4-2 pins Jack converter..with this..you can hear Stereo Audio (from your Left & Right) with your headphone..but you can't answer a call using headphone mic (if there's available depend on your headphone type)..you should use phone mic to speak on call..

Default Adapters...

I had the exact same problem with my fire3's i got (i have a X10) and after surfing the interwebs I found out that the SE phones have a jacked up "special" plug, got my self some sony headphones that came with an adapter and that adapter is maybe 5 inches long (its a cable bro) but point is just look for a cheep sony headphone adapter and it will work

There's a 10cm adapter cable you can get that fixes this, costs .50 euro, or buy an iphone apapter cable that includes a microphone that just connects into a normal pair of headphones.
