Styles, you mean fix it so offline gps works, or was OP the fix? Because OP fix does not seem to work, in least at starting without any data. Once that is done, it works good on airplane mode as long as gps is on the entire time. As soon as it turns off, it can't work till data works again.

It's true that we can't fix it fully, because it still needs a data connection at some point. I did the fix yesterday by using the FC09 kexec package, and it does have an effect - I'm getting locks much faster, even inside the house where it normally keeps looking for gps without finding anything... so it is an improvement, but it isn't a Garmin replacement by any means.

Maybe someone who understands standard GPS units better than us can explain how those units can work without the need for agps data, or at least without the ability to update that data... that might provide a clue for an even better fix (or at least explain why a better fix isn't possible)

Another use for stand alone GPS is something like what happend in New Orleans with Hurricane Katrina. All the cell networks where down for the most part, or in Japan earth quake/tsunami.

I just DO NOT GET WHAT THEY WHERE THINKING its just as dumb as having a FM radio not work with out data on.

And if the phone is an old phone u have that's no longer hooked up, it COULD have been a uesful gps

What good are GPS coordinates without map data to display them in terms we can understand? The Katrina victims are no more capable of navigating with raw GPS data than you or I... our phones don't retain much map data, so the best you could do would be to navigate within the last area that was stored in the cache, but this cache is periodically wiped to make room for new data. Some apps are specifically designed to store more map data, but you still need a data connection in advance to download that data - you won't be downloading the app, let alone the map data, once such an emergency has occurred. And those map packs can get kinda big, so it may not always be practical to have that much data stored for such a rare occurrence.

In my experience, the most useful improvement to be had with this is that momentary data loss no longer causes the phone to freak out as easily, so it no longer abandons whatever information it already has in favor of a fresh start that isn't always necessary or helpful...

CoPilot Live. does NOT need any data to display maps & a point on the map. I have it & I have a 32gb sdcard so a few gigs of maps is no big deal but becuz samsung engs don't know how to make the gps work with out data it seems kinda useless to have. OurxMap, etc. Just look on the play store,

Your not understanding what I'm getting at, so we can just leave it at that, And yes I can intrepid gps data (lat lon) its not that hard. Plus u use gps data with a paper map. Trust me it can be done I teached "Land Nav" in the Army.

I think I see your focus - it can be done, and fairly reasonably - does that cover it, roughly?

I'm just saying that it isn't as surprising as it might seem, because the accommodations needed aren't available to everyone... I suppose the newer hardware makes it much more plausible, so perhaps the issue is that, while they couldn't do it as easily on older phones, now they can - so why aren't they, yet? Does that sound like a reasonable way to put it?

Ya that's reasonable

Also after the phone is No longer in service to any cell provider the gps part of the phone becomes useless. :banghead::banghead: I don't think the data needed for gps to work could be pulled from the cell network if your not paying. When the smartphones came out I thought they would still be usefull as mp3 players web wifi browsers & as GPS maping units but that's not the case with our Epics.

What is so "lol" about that? Turn on Airplane mode reboot the phone so that its powered ON with out the cell transceiver ON & see what you get when u turn the GPS receiver ON? Or better yet take a Boat or aircraft (or car) 10 or 20 miles away from cell towers.

Let us know if you get locks?

I did not know that. hahahaha, I always wondered why when I traveled if there was no coverage and I closed maps and reopened them it wouldn't lock. perhaps its for battery savings?
