I would imagine that the limited amount of memory in the phone has a lot to do with this decision. ICS is designed with phones that have 1GB or more in mind and the Play has less than 512MB. When combining games that require a large amount of RAM and and OS that requires a large amount of RAM there really isn't anything you can do other than upgrade the hardware of the phone.

Although I am disappointed to hear that there will be no ICS release, I do understand their reasons. Especially as VZ was never going to release it anyway.

At this point I would much rather see Sony work hard on a Xperia PLAY 2. My contract ends in 6 months and I do not want to replace my phone unless it has a game pad as I really dislike touch screen gaming. So again, I would rather at this point Sony works on a replacement or this phone.

Am I saddend, yes. But I would like to thank Sony and Sony Ericcson for their hard work in attempting to make ICS work with our phone. They have been extremely good to use users firmware update wise compared to other companies. So again. THANK YOU SONY for your efforts and for being honest with the Xperia PLAY community. I do hope that there is a Xperia PLAY 2 in the works....
BAM!!

DONATE TO ME
Not really surprised or disappointed.

Looking at this from a logical point of view, I'm kinda siding moreso with a "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." train of thought... we already witnessed firsthand that the upgrade came with sacrifices and compromises... leaving us with 2.3.4 didn't really do anything but save everyone a hassle. Less complaints filed for Sony, less of the devs having to stop working on new projects to patch older ones, and less of a waiting game on our consumer-side.

People that are willing to sacrifice their stability and software compatibility just to have the newest thing can already do so. The rest of use can stick to 2.3.X which works perfectly with everything.

My only real regret is not getting my hands on that sweet-looking new Game Launcher (which I'm willing to bet could just be ripped from the ROM and used without ICS).

ICS isnt design for 1gb+ Ram phones :/...

cant u see its sony who are developing such buggy software
2011 SONY linup can hardly handle ICS where as Nexus S of 2010 with almost same specs can handle ICS very gently
